Inaccurate & lazy BBC journalism again?

The move to Glanford Park was the first time a new Football League stadium had been built since the end of the Second World War - although many clubs have moved home in the subsequent 20 years.

This is a paragraph out of the story on the BBC website about Scunthorpe being 50/50 on getting the go-ahead for a new stadium.

Now correct me if I'm wrong (although I know we first played at Roots Hall before our move to The Stadium & The Kursaal) but surely Roots Hall in it's current guise, opened in 1955 was a new stadium opened after the end of the Second World War?

Southend is in the south-east and is therefore not part of England according to the Labour Party sponsored BBC. How many Southern accents make it on to the Beeb these days? It's the Guardian with pictures.

Good spot, Rich - phone the effing idiots right now and give 'em both barrels!

:flamer: :guns:

someone called eadstwoodisinessex has now pointed Roots Hall built in 1955 on the bbc 606 thread.
incidentally, the bbc's new homepage is a nightmare as are the changes to the NewsNow site (a good site for sufc news) - change! bah! humbug!

I have emailed them

However as Southend were at RH until 1914 I guess that the researcher didn't think it was a new ground....

Actually, sport aside (where, it seems, all the researchers are interns) I've found the BBC to do a pretty good job of reasonably objective journalism compared with the populist bias of, say, Sky News or any newspaper. Love it or loathe it, because of the public money it is obliged to provide balanced reporting, even if it does have a very middle class air.

Compare this to what you'll find in the Sun or the Guardian, which is essentially editorial opinion with a few facts thrown in to keep it current. I'll pass over some other culprits for now.

I'm always wary of a post from a student that starts 'Actually'.

Don't listen to your lecturers sonny. The Beeb is a panacea of PC sh!te.

Surely (I nearly said actually) if it were a panacea, it would be a cure or solution to what you call "PC sh!te". It's from the Greek panakeia, from panakes, "all-healing," from pan-, "all" + akos, "cure.".

Keep listening to your lecturers.

Panacea a cure-all, either physical medication or a solution to a problem. The term is mostly used in the negative sense of an illusory solution to all problems.

OOOh get her.

Wikipedia pah! (you can put in your own definitions :) )

If you are going to use it in a negative sense you would need to indicate that with some accompanying word or words.

No matter. Your somewhat unusual id reminds me of a fine goal scored by the great man himself at Stockport years ago. A defender was deliberately standing over the ball at a free-kick. Bentley got very annoyed with him and took a fast run up attempting to kick the ball as hard as possible at the defender from more or less point blank range. The defender somehow got out of the way and the ball absolutely screamed into the net. Happy days.

Graduate, actually, :hilarious: and I can make up my own mind, thanks! Like I said, the Beeb is obliged to provide balanced reporting, not sensationalist headlines like those of the "MADNESS OF PC BRITAIN" ilk that I'm sure you're so fond of.

Graduate from Birmingham University? Cor. And don't preach to me about the balanced reporting of the BBC, they are obliged to do it, but they don't. If we had a real government rather than the Sweaty Sleaze Machine, they would revoke their charter and spare us the licence fee. I suggest you do a masters on 'How not to talk utter toss'.

I love how you go from suggesting an air of superiority on my part to adopting one yourself. You're a living contradiction.

I'm not saying the BBC is perfect (Exhibit A: The One And Only) but having some form of state-funded media is better than the alternative. Why don't you run away from this socialist hell-hole and go over to the States, where the horrors of state-funded TV are confined to PBS and you can have your pick from Fox News (immigrants and terrorists and liberals, oh my!) or MSNBC (George Bush sux lol).
