Echo News "I'm quite happy" - Shrimpers boss Maher welcomes National League change

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has welcomed the rule change which allows him to select more substitutes this season.

For the first time ever, teams in the National League can pick seven players on the bench this term.

And Maher believes it is a step in the right direction.

“I’m quite happy because you go away from home and people always take a spare couple of players just in case something happens so you can include them now,” said Maher.

“There’s opportunities to put a youngster on the bench and you get a keeper on there too now.

“We had it last year against Bromley when Gus (Scott-Morriss) went in goal.

“Despite how good he was I wouldn’t want to put him in again.

“It's moving with the times so why not.”

Teams will now be able to make five substitutes this season rather than just three.
