...of threads getting closed because people can't stop insulting each other.

Don't blame the mods, they do a great job.

Sort it out boys and girls.

Can we have another thread about riots?

Totally agree , assuming an automatic air of superiority (whatever the political)then resorting to personal insults or simply short ill conceived replies as if to dictate and say this is the end, makes a mockery of any form of debate.

Yes, as the story is ongoing, it's an entirely valid topic.

There should, however, be this proviso.

From Essex Police:

"Officers have vowed to take a robust approach to anyone who uses social networking sites to stimulate fictitious rumours."

So if people are passing on rumours they've read on FB or twitter, or 'been told by a friend', they should think about how irresponsible their actions might be if they repeat them on here.

And for the likes of me that just tried to catch up trawling through 8 or 9 pages with half the posts containing people trying to outpoint each other is incredibly frustrating. I nearly had a one man riot on the train ! That was a good thread gone bad. As seal says can we start another ?

Me too Andy, and it's generally the same reason each time. Now, at the moment, I have an hour to kill worrying about my other half driving off to work and having to travel through some of the areas which have been flashpoints over recent times so something to help pass the time until he lets me know he's arrived safely would be appreciated.

Now I understand that the IPCC have declared that Duggan did not open fire on police officers so doubtless the police are going to come under investigation again for their tactics and probably blamed for all the rioting that has ensued but I'm going to state very clearly that as far as I'm concerned, if you are out on the street with a gun (or a replica) and you are intimating through word or body language that you're going to use it, then that's it, I don't see the police have a choice, certainly not with someone who already was known to them. We either want the police to try their best to keep people safe or we don't, and I know which I'd prefer. We have to stop emasculating the powers that be and start taking a leaf out of the books of other countries, with zero tolerance.

I really hope that the steps taken with all the extra police out tonight, the many appeals to parents to know where their kids are and the very visual spectacle of hundreds of people turning out to clean THEIR communities up will have made a difference. I'd also thank every one of the emergency services doing their jobs in very difficult circumstances, long may their professionalism continue. Finally, let's hope the papers tomorrow concentrate on the power of the people involved in the clean ups rather than any more reports of rioting.

Please don't turn this into another riots thread, otherwise I'll close it and any subsequent thread.

However I agree with pickledseal that the original thread should not have been closed, and I am discussing this with the owners and other mods with a mind to reopening it. As it's an ongoing situation I believe there's validity in it being reopened.

Thanks
H

But it wasn't the riots themselves that caused the closure of the last one Harry, and as you say there is definite validity in having a thread open.

wHY NOT JUST ban those that threaten abuse or disrespect when they do it ,1 strike and out, people like me i mean but at least it keeps threads running smoothly.

I suspect the other thread may have been closed as the owners will be at the game and some of the worst cuplrits of hurling abuse, provoking abuse and picking pointless arguments on semantics are unlikely to be at the game.

I will re-open another thread but stick to debating with the courtesy you would show someone in real life (or not as the case may be!).

Well blimey Riley! Not at the game for once but I stand by what I said about Duggan in this one
