Many on here have commented on the quality of Billy Sharp and Luke Varney, and as they are the two scorers in their sides current 1-1 scoreline, I thought I would mention it.

I am not saying we should have broken the bank to bring one of these players in, but is it just me qho is very surprised we did not seem to even look at either of these class acts?

Thoughts?

(Yes I know we got Foran, and dont get me wrong I think he is going to be quality, but we could have done with two strikers, especially as Foran is currently on the wing)
 
Wasn't their clubs asking silly money? ie 2 million for sharp and million plus for varney? Dont get me wrong id love either of those two at the Hall,but its going to be a few years yet till we pay those kind of fees.
 
And why didn't we look at that Ronaldo fella too?! We knew he was having problems at Madrid and didn't even show an interest!

I always liked the look of Chris Greenacre.I saw him score the other day and wondered why no Championship had gone in for him over recent times.I think he was playing for Tranmere.

Yes it is just you. We had numerous bids rejected for Billy Sharp last summer.

The dissapointing thing was that after terms were agreed and he was due to come down to the Hall ,his wife didn't want to come down here. Spot on Glasowsufc.
Unfortunately his agent still keen to get some cash from an intrested club with some cash to splash offered a young striker from Sheffield for around £100 K his name, Billy Sharp. It seemed someone didn't want to pay that sum on a unknown:thump: Think it was about the same time they released Kights aswell:confused:

Wino, good point. Tell me, how is it that a place like Barnsley can attract two decent Hungarians and we can't get anyone? Has Tilly had a look at some of the Kosovans at Vic Circus?
 
I'm quite surprised that we don't exploit the country's near us i.e. France and especially Holland, some sort of link up with a Ajax or Lille to offer experience to their younger up and coming lads. I realize Moussa's from Belguim but he came from Ricky Duncans connections from Cambridge I believe.

I think it all goes down to what Neil Diamond sang at the end of the daylight...

Exactly, I find it to be one of the only but most frustrating elements of Tilly's reign in that he won't search untapped markets. A couple of Eastern Europeans desparate to prove themselves in English football could have been exactly what we were after. Who knows if they really hit the ground running we could have been looking at a decent sell-on fee too?

Eastwood, Cole, Hooper, Hammell, Foran all came from relatively "untapped markets" in the conference and SPL. Bearing in mind we were also looking around Scott McDonald, Roy O'Donovan and George O'Callaghan as well i think Tilson is actively searching various other markets... Thats without bringing in Moussa from Belgium and the Swedish Kid who i understand will return to us in the summer.

It's not so much the fact we're not looking (although i agree we should be looking harder and a hell of a lot earlier), Its the fact in our current situation we can't be offering silly money. The two Hungarians at Barnsley for instance are on a considerable higher wage than the rest of the squad from what i hear... something we can't afford to do.

As for people suggesting we missed the boat on a few players, namely Kights and Sharp, it happens. We told Kabba he weren't good enough. Swindon told Eastwood he wasn't a striker 2 months before he signed for us. Motherwell almost signed some unknown Brazilian teenager from Gremio but didn't think hed develop enough to be worthy of a place in the SPL... his name being Ronaldinho...

Depends on your point of view about the two Hungarians. They may be on high wages but how much is it worth for us to stay in the Championship? Bringing in a couple of loan players on higher wages for less than 3 months to try and keep us in this league would seem worth the gamble to me. We wouldn't be stuck with them if it all went wrong but at least we would be seen to be giving it our best shot.

Fair point.
But how would you feel if your boss bought in someone to do the same job as you on a higher wage?
