Question Ian Harte?

palexander

Life President
Is available and if he was willing to join St Mirren, then surely we could afford his wages - at least till the end of the season?

Said in an interview today he is willing to 'play First Division football' - but to be honest, I guess he means Leeds (again), Leicester etc?

Still... worth a sniff?

yes yes. we were unable to being anyone else on on a fee with the exception of jeff but a player with asperations of playing for the "bhoys" is well within our grasp.

I am in two minds - dead ball ability - yes please

Age, Wages - No thanks.

I think i am leaning towards the club finding a solid left back with time on his side. (and no thats not Johnny.....yet)

Aspiration is one thing, doing it is another.

He said Strachan contacted him 'a few years ago' about a deal that didnt happen as Celtic wouldnt pay £1.5m for him.

Now he's in his 30s, I doubt Wee Gordie would be so keen now.

Not exactly rushed off his feet with offers, still sure Celtic are desperately trying to reach him as I type... perhaps if Real Madrid got a sniff they would be on the blower too?

I would have loved to have seen him come in. 60 odd caps for the Republic of Ireland, played in World Cups, played in the Premiership. That sort of experience is very hard to come by, especially on a free.

I hope Tilly and Brush tried with him. Would have been a big help in Herd's development as well, learning from Harte.

If he were to come then what messages would that send to Barrett/Clarke? It would be our third defender on loan this season, plus we've got Herd, Francis, Sankofa ect as backup.

Harte is avaliable on a free so wouldn't be a loan.

I could understand this if it wasn't a special player, but Harte has over 60 caps for Ireland and played in World Cups. Clarke's contract is up at the end of the season, and I can't see him staying.

At the age of 31, Ian Harte should still be able to get a Premier League Contract - unless there are other factors that aren't being reported!

The fact that he's a pretty poor defender is the reason why he's not in the Premier League and hasn't been for years.

Great player going forward, one of the best set-piece takers around, but very dodgy defensively. That said, he'd be more than good enough for this level.

He's also lost what little pace he had from what I've seen and read.

Harte is one of the best left backs in the Prem in the last decade. Yes he may have lost some pace, but so has Dougie. Providing his brain works quickly enough, his pace at this level won't be an issue! Clarkey & AB might be younger, but their extra pace doesn't stop them from stupoidly thinking they can nick the ball off somebody. Harte will be too clever to try that!

I would love to see him at Southend, would add a bit of much needed experience to the side and the defence in particular.

I think we are looking at this the wrong way, perhaps Harte looks at Southend and thinks jeez a little club down South, have to move my family for a eighteen months, then up sticks when offered a one year deal and I want two minimum

Lets be realistic, unless like Dougie Freedman who obviously is happy playing down South and obviously no other clubs were interested in him through one thing or another, then I think we can come up with a thousand players who are looking for employment in the game and 999 will laugh at us.

This is not a dig at the club, but a fact of the financial position we are in, if anyone thinks the next two or three years will be different to this season, then I will borrow those glasses please.

This problem isnot new, it started when we won promotion to the championship, and more importantly when we were hammered in the play off versus Doncaster, nothing has changed especially in the defence and the front line, not knocking Walker as it could have been anyone, but the miss in the second leg was unbeliveable and who knows if it had gone in, it may have changed the game, though I doubt it, it would have papered over the cracks for another season.

If that is correct how come Harte has only made 8 premier league appearances since leaving Leeds in 2004 and just 4 this season in the CCC?

He played for Levante in Spain for a few seasons, did well & was highly rated. He was missing football in this country & stupidly went to Sunderland!
