Tonight's referee is Neil Swarbrick from Preston. An experienced official who has made good progress over his four years on the National List and he is one of a few League referees who would be trusted to referee a match involving a Premiership club. Don't expect any favours as in this situation the officials usually favour the Premiership teams - the teams they aspire to referee in future. Despite denials, Premiership clubs DO have a say in refereeing matters.
Notwithstanding this, I think he is quite a decent referee. Slightly below average card count.
He has officiated two previous Southend away games; a 4-0 defeat at Sunderland and the more recent 4-1 defeat at Leeds. (Following the sequence a 4-2 should get you a good price on the fixed odds!) He has yet to visit the Hall, unsurprising for a Lancashire-based official.
Assistants are Scott Duncan (Tyne & Weir) and Michael Naylor (Sheffield) with Jason Whiteley travelling from West Yorks to wield the numbers board.
