Friends compete for Town places

DANNY CADAMARTERI is ready to roll back the years to help drive Town to a bright future.
DANNY CADAMARTERI is ready to roll back the years to help drive Town to a bright future.
The striker has been reunited with old Everton teammate Phil Jevons, who has joined on loan from Bristol City.
And while it means more competition for places, Cadamarteri is more than happy to have his fellow 28-year-old on board.
The summer signing from Leicester is hoping for a starting slot at Southend tomorrow after having to make do with coming off the bench to help Town to their 3-0 FA Cup second-round win over Grimsby.
Jevons, who scored twice on his full club debut on Saturday, when he partnered Andy Booth, will also want to be involved from the off down at Roots Hall.
Throw Luke Beckett – who is Town’s top scorer after notching his sixth of the season as a substitute against Grimsby – into the mix, and manager Andy Ritchie has an interesting dilemma.
“Competition for places is crucial at any club, and we’ve got it now,” said Cadamarteri, who is also desperate to figure against former club Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday.
“We have four experienced players in Boothy, Luke, Phil and myself, and a youngster I rate highly in Lucas Akins, who will be pushing for recognition when he returns from his loan at Northwich.
“Obviously we all want to be involved in every game, and we’ll all be pulling out all the stops to show the manager we deserve a place in the starting side.”
On Jevons, Cadamarteri said: “He’s a great bloke to have around the dressing room and a good player as well. He’ll get great goals, but he’ll also get poacher’s goals as well, as he showed against Grimsby.
“We’re good mates who go back a long way, and we were often in competition together as youngsters at Everton.
“If we have to arm-wrestle one another for a place in the team, so be it!”
