How has the recession hit you, as a football fan?

Meltdown

Guest
Hello –

I am currently in the process of researching and authoring a study on how the recession has hit football.

The general consensus of ‘experts’ in 2007 was that football was “recession-proof”. I think the past three years have probably indicated that this was not (and is not) entirely the case. A startlingly small amount has thus far been written on the topic too – we get the odd bit here and there but nothing detailed and certainly nothing comprehensive.

Part of my research comprises a short questionnaire, the results of which I intend to put to football finance experts, fan bodies and a selection of clubs themselves. This questionnaire is aimed at fans; primarily how the recession has influenced their spending on football and attendance of games themselves.

I would be extremely grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes of your time and complete this survey (located at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/football-recession ). It comprises 18 questions and should only take 2 or 3 minutes to complete. I am aiming to get responses from fans of every league club in the country.

It would be of huge benefit to me if you could help with this. If you have any questions (or, indeed, something to say on the subject), feel free to contribute them to this thread & I’ll do my best to answer them.

Mods – I hope this is in the correct part of your forum, thanks.

Thank you, & good luck for the rest of the season!

You are having a laugh ...

Do you really need to ask, honestly ?

EDIT. Just read the survey and the original post so its rather obvious that you know nothing of our current plight .

The recession lead to a downturn in lending .
this in turn delayed the building of the new stadium complex by may be two years, which in turned delayed the additional revenue streams as well as the expected investment into the club, some of which had already been used in advance.
This meant stringent cost cutting across the board in an attempt to keep our heads above water, whilst this has been marginally succesful, as in we are currently still in business (whatch this space) it has had considerable impact on the squad , in both size, quality and morale (due to not being paid regularly) as well as being in a transfer embargo.
The result is we are currently in a relagation battle with 17 fit players on our books

And you ask if i an worried that the price of a programme might have gone up !!!!!

i think even before the recession it was hard enough. to take a family to a home game your looking a £60 odd quid then you add a programme, drinks and lunch your looking at £100 for a family of four. its even worse for away games with travel etc. recession hasn't helped anything though.

Recession is always going to be tough on finances. People tighten their belt at the word recession without sometimes looking at the impact on their finances. Just because you are in a recession doesn't mean that it is going to impact you massivley (unless you own your own business or are made redundant) Prices will rise slightly as they do in a recession, but unless you was spending everything you earnt before the recession it should effect you as you would have a buffer between what you earn and what you spend.

Southend have actually increased my spending this yeat, mainly on the match day programmes. I used to buy just the first and last ones of the season, but when i bought the first programme this year i noticed a slight sign of a flag on the spine of the programme and realised that it was going to be the Southend United Flag. The OCD in me took over and since then i have purchased all home programmes lol (slighlty annoyed that some of the programmes do not line up but i can almosy live with that lol)

But on the other hand i have saved a fortune on not buying a burger before the match. If they bring back the onions though i may have to reconsider and cut down on my footlong subway to just 6 inches at half time.

Whilst obviously not in as much detail as you, I am aware of what's happening with you lot, and sympathise with you. The impact of credit being restricted is a major factor in this study, just not this part. This questionnaire is geared toward fans' spending habits over the past 5 years.

Sorry if I offended. Thanks to all those who have participated. Best of luck for the future.

Prince Phillip himself couldn't have posted this request with less tact and sensitivity.

The Value of Sainsbury hasn't been too adversely affected I am led to believe therefore we are in great shape. Play up Sainsbury, Sainsbury play up.
