I'm sure my son (age 9) is the only boy in Tampa who has a Southend Utd bookmark, and Tee Shirt and when the rest of the class talk sport and how they love Tampa Bay Rays or Bucs, he proudly stands up and says that he supports Southend United.

For years I bet my cousin was the only person in California wearing the Elonex home shirt! He loved it!

For me, it was always being able to spend time with my dad that made football "our" thing. Both my kids have come along for a while but work and money prevents my son from seeing more, my daughter was only ever interested because successive boyfriends were!

You know OBL you are spot on re the time with parents.
My son was six when he first came with me and now 23 living in Balham he still makes the trip as he loves Father and son day,he was taught a young age to ignore the ***** who only taunt away fans and the idiots that feel 10 pints of cheap lager is part and parcel of the pre match to build their low esteem
Now with my dad age 85,me 52 and my son 23 all three enjoy the football experience and if we lose so what its something to talk about on how to fix it after the game on the way home, sometimes I shake my head on those who need alife away from the game when we lose on here, we all want the team to go places, but at the end of the day as long as the world is spinning and we are healthy to enjoy match day,let things that we can not control not stop in the way of a great day out

Uts

Regular beatings and the offer of free coke every game. I agree with others that the day out, train journey etc help make the day/form the bond. My eldest also enjoys my 'funny friends' and me swearing during matches (occasionally I hasten to add - I do pay a £1 fine for each slip up). We live in North-East London and my chest swells with pride every time I see him out on the school field in his Blues shirt, surrounded by the likes of West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal......

just as a by product - has anyone read "she stood there laughing" by stephen foster - life as a stoke supporter and his son (will return to this later)

living in enfield both boys were spurs fans. took them to first southend game vs rotherham jan 2000, a few years later my youngest goes to secondary school and one day comes home n says "dad, i'm gonna be a southend fan from now on"

stephen foster's son had said the same thing to him and my thoughts were the same "are you sure, you will have many seasons of despair n crap football, there will be no pleasure or success" BUT i'm so proud of him and he got a certain kudoss at school for supporting a non premiership team. now his mates look out for our results. He got two promotions in his first two years as a southend fan - all his lifetime of success in two years:smile:

My dad just forced me along to as many games as he could, good or bad and it just became second nature to me... I was only ever brought up as a shrimper

And I'm grateful for that!

Must say that once Ben my son was born, anything southend related in baby size was purchased. As he got older, the Southend duvet, clock, calendars, lunch boxes, drinks bottles etc followed. Then when he started playing the first kit was a Southend kit. Growing up in this house he got used to me and my dad when he came over talking all things southend and he got used to us going off to see them play. I'm not saying I brainwashed him but it's in his blood and he never contemplated supporting anyone else. He is now in his third season as a ST and now plays in the Southend United u10 development squad. Added to the fact that i can afford a ST for us both we can get to all the home games and some away games. Defo a born shrimper.

Your child should support the team that represents where he is from not who is father supports

My dad's west ham but I ain't from East London like him so I have ZERO interest

Right so in was born in Redhill, Surrey who should I support then? I lived there till I was 3 then moved to Chelmsford Essex and have no memories of my time in Surrey. My dad was born in Southend and he took me to my first game a Southend United game and I wanted to support them. What's wrong with that?

Er, then MK jnr would end up supporting MK Dons. Doesn't always work like that.

My father was Orient ( the poor deluded fool that he was) but he never once forced his loyalties on me. I made my own choice as did my brother (Shrimpers Are Magic) When my son is old enough to go then I will take him and would hope he sees the light and follows Southend. Of course, if he goes over to the dark side and supports West Ham, Man Utd, Liverpool etc then I'm sure he will be very happy living in the shed.

You have done well Tampa Blue... In a country were sport is so important, you can be proud of your parenting skills and your son... It takes guts to stand up in front of others and show loyalty of this sort!

Long May it continue for all the young blues standing up for "proper" football values

So you was brought up in Chelmsford/South Essex

Nothing wrong in being Southend then is there

So what about my son and daughter both born in Essex and have has sufc shirts and clobber since born but because of my job we have lived in Bedfordshire and now oxfordshire? What about my 3rd child when he/she is born? I get posted to a different base every 3/4 years. Why can't they just follow in my footsteps?
