Yesterday, ex-Shrimper Charles Ademeno scored a hat-trick within 5 minutes of being on the pitch. Instantly, his achievement was met with a chorus of 'he didn't do that for us...' posts and it got me thinking, we're quick to criticise Tilly and Brush for letting these guys go but never give them the plaudits they deserve for obviously spotting some top drawer goal scorers.
All of the above got a good run at the club and had their chances to break into the side, but for whatever reason things never clicked for them. Since leaving SUFC though all have gone on to hit great runs of form; Paynter is forging a formiddable partnership down at Swindon, MacDonald has proven he can score goals at this level at the Bees, Hooper scored the goals which rocketed Scunthorpe into The Championship and since leaving us Stanislas and Kightly have both equipped themselves well at the highest level of the game. Now I know we couldn't have kept Stanislas but I remember Tilly emploring us all to get behind Paynter at the time saying he was a great trainer and a 'confidence player'; eventually the boo boys and poor run of form meant we lost him. Harrold followed soon afterwards and also Charlie Mac, despite many players in post-match interviews saying how good these guys were.
The point I'm trying to make is that a lot of things have to click for footballers to make it; a decent playmaker to supply them, happiness at home, fan encouragement, the belief of the manager... but regardless of that, we should all now admit that Tilly and Brush were right to put those guys out every week as they've all shown they are more than capable of being good footballers at this level. In a sense, whilst it's a shame they didn't do it for us it reassures my faith in Tilly & Brush even further.
And any of us that got on the players' backs within 4 games of them playing for us could also do well to remember past lessons. I'd hate to see Malone, JFC, Grant, Walker etc go on to be the next Gary Hooper...
Oh, and Merry Christmas!
