Holiday in Paris

Hi all, need a bit of advice please :)

Going for a weeks break in Paris, around October time, and just wondered if anybody could recommend a decent hotel (but not too expensive) and supply any advice for someone that doesn't usually leave these shores.

Cheers in advance

If you are planning on seeing lots of museums and suchlike, definitely get a Paris Museum Pass. We paid €45 each for three days a couple of years ago and that proved to be great value; not least as it allows you priority access to the Louvre.

We stayed on the Rue Pergolese, very close to the Arc de Triomphe (climbing to the top of this is a must); an excellent location for all your touristy stuff.

Cheapest 3 star I could find in October was about £620 2 people for 7 nights using Superbreak.com. Have a look for special offers if you are staying for a week you might even get a couple of nights free. Also the Eurostar travel & Hotel deals on their website can be good.

You best check the online reviews of the Hotels before you go, you can get a general idea on what they will be like. Also look on Paris google streetview and you can get an idea of the area as well.

If you mention we saved Frances backsides in two world wars when booking you will get a discount in most French hotels.

On my ill faited trip to see Southend in the Anglo Italian Cup (1997) in which me and the lads got stuck in Paris for three days and missed the game,we stayed in Hotel Brasil in Paris..

Its not a great hotel in terms of facilities etc but it is dirt cheap and smack bang in the heart of everything. If your treating the Mrs then dont go here as its basic but if itd a cheapo break where you want everything close by then not a bad shout.

On the plus side the room we were in over looked a stunning french birds bathroom so we got to perv on her while having a beer.

A hotel room is just that a room,used for sleeping pooing and fun things with strangers that you meet whilst drunk so cheap or dear it matters not really.Why not look at gites a short train ride in.
You could stay at mine but its a 2 hour train ride.

You could also try the hotels around EuroDisney as that is easily accessible by rail from Paris. Good range of hotel prices and recognisable brands.

When I last went to Paris (admittedly, about 6 years ago now), I stayed in the Hotel du Cygne - which is slap bang in the middle of the 1er arrondisement. It's a lovely wee hotel - it probably only rates 2* because of a lack of facilities - no 24h front desk, no pool, no gym etc. etc. I recall the room we stayed in being really lovely - clean, tastefully decorated and with a big bath.

In terms of location, you'll struggle to get much better than this - it's only a couple of minutes' walk from the Forum des Halles, which has an RER station as well as a metro. The RER from Gare du Nord to Chatelet-Les Halles (if you're travelling by Eurostar) takes less than 10 minutes.

A double room costs €92 per night, or €644 for a week - that's £570 at today's exchange rates.

* * *

I've not stayed at Hotel Henri IV, but I'd be sorely tempted to. Locations really don't get much better - it's on the Ile de la Cite, right in the middle of the Seine - the island on which Notre Dame and the Sainte-Chapelle are located. The rates are tremendous too - €76.80 per night for a double with bath, which for a week comes out at €537.60 for the week - £475 at today's rates.

The downside is that the hotel looks on the basic side - it's certainly not haute luxe - but according to Time Out Paris the rooms are clean, it's Paris's "best budget hotel", and as a result the rooms get booked out a long time in advance.

Bonne chance!

One final one to chuck into the mix... if you're a fan of modern design and architecture, the Philippe Starck-designed Mama Shelter looks incredibly sleek and trendy. At €89 per night (€623 / £550 for the week), it's good value as well.

The compromise is location - it's in the 20th, which is hardly in the centre of town. In fact, it's not a part of Paris I know at all!

* * *

As for stuff to do... well, do all the cheesy stuff, because it's great and it's worth it - Sacre Coeur and Montmartre; Arc de Triomphe & the Champs-Elysees; the Eiffel Tower; Notre Dame; the Musee D'Orsay.

Of the less well known stuff to do...

* If it's a sunny day, visit Sainte-Chapelle. The stained glass windows are jaw-dropping. On a cloudy day, it's just not the same, so wait for a sunny day, and (if my memory serves me correctly) go in the afternoon.

* If you like Monet, go to not only the Musee de l'Orangerie, which is in the Place de la Concorde (to see some massive lillies frescoes); but also go to Musee Marmottan-Monet, which is way out in the 16th. If you're a Monet fan, it's 100% worth the trip - it's a fabulous museum.

* Foodwise, I heartily recommend Le Gros Minet - The Fat Kitten! It's a proper French local restaurant which happens to be in the 1er arrondisement, near Les Halles. Excellent French food and, generally, extremely competitively priced. If you're a fan of rugby, it's a bit of a rugby shrine - lots of six nations shirts and cartoons, betraying the South-Western origins of the owner. For something a bit more exotic, Chez Omar in the 3eme is a good bet... the Couscous Royale is enormous... you could probably share it between two of you!

* Other than that, my main recommendation would be to take a good pair of shoes and walk as much as you can. Central Paris is much more compact than (say) central London, and so if the weather is nice, just go a-wandering. Le Marais is a beautiful area (take in Place des Vosges, for instance), as is the Left Bank and the Quartier Latin - the Pantheon is worth a visit, as is the Jardins des Luxembourgs.

* Try and speak a bit of French if you can - the locals will love you for it, and will treat you much more nicely (and practise their English on you) if you've at least had a go in French.

* And that's it - have a great trip; it's a wonderful city.

:)

I'm not entirely sure on this so you will have to check before hand, but I think, being English, you're permitted to waltz into any French establishment and stay however long is necessary. This, of course, includes any regal estates and palices.

If they protest, loudly proclaim that your father's father fought long and hard to save this nation and it's only through our ever lasting kindness that they have it back.

In-Ger-Lund, In-Ger-Lund, In-Ger-Lund.

Completely disagree. The French can spot a Brit a mile off no matter how much effort you make..

On my last visit I carried a can of Kronenberg, wore a Le Coq Sportif tracksuit and was treated like a **** in every church and cathedral I visited.

Went to Paris once and had an awful weekend, well it wasn't all bad but had a couple of bad experiences that kind of ruined it.

did Paris in a day a few years back - early train from ashford, brekkie on board, notre dame (walked to top), coffee, montmartre, sacre coeur, arc de triomphe (walked to top), champs elysee, eiffel tower (too busy to stop), rushed to get train back - where a 3 course meal with champers thrown in

next time i'[ll do versailles and the louvre and a trip down the seine,

I have totally agree with this, last time I went to Paris was about 4 years ago. We had just been to the Dordogne for 2 weeks, when my company decided that I need to go to the Paris Office to install some new kit. Had to be there Friday, work Saturday morning for 2 hours and then again on the Monday, so as I was put up in a 5* hotel decided to bring the wife along, as she could have a lie in on the Saturday morning whilst I worked.

Anyway although i am not usually conversational in french, the Dordogne holiday had given me confidence to try some french and I was amazed by the reception I got. Paris could not be any friendlier, in one restaurant (unfortunately I cannot remember the name - it was off the Champs-Elysees) I was offered another portion of Rare Lamb at no extra cost, once you try to order in french they usually assist you in a non patronising way and if you get to stuck will revert to english, but in a happier, friendlier mood.
