Help.....

Not sure if this is the right place for this post but still....

On Saturday i am taken the old man to Old Trafford to watch United vs Pompey for his 60th. One problem thought, i am planning on taking the train to make more or a day of it. I know there is a station right outside Old Trafford but i can not find any websites that tell me how much the ticket actually would be from Shoeburyness to Manchester or what time is best to leave and arrive. Can any one help?

Thanks in advance.

from Shoeburyness you'll be going into london, and then from London Euston up to Manchester Picadilly. The train from Piccadilly to Man Utd FC Station is a specialist service, it runs I think 3 trips to the ground and 3 trips afterwards.

You can look up the times for this train here:

http://www.northernrail.org/travel/stations/Manchester+Utd+Football+Gd

I don't think you can buy a ticket online for the Manchester United station, so you'll have to buy your ticket on the day for this (be warned, the queues at Piccadilly can be very long on a match day).

If I was you I'd be looking to get a train that arrived at Piccadilly at 12 noon and from there getting the connecting train to the ground.

Alternative options are to walk to Old Trafford (about a 40min walk from the city centre), or getting the bus or the tram. I can advice on these if you want me to... personally I think all these options are preferable to the train, however the train is the simplest. After the game it can be a pain, because if you miss the one soon after the game has finished the one after is at about 6pm.

Shoeburyness 0720 - Manchester Piccadilly 1149
Manchester Piccadilly 1855 - Shoeburyness 2345
One adult is £75, so pricey... this is because it's not far in advance.

Any other advice, give me a shout... I've been quite a few times.

Driving would be much cheaper, even a night in a Travelodge on the saturday would be cheaper than £150 for two train tickets...

No it was having a bug but i looked on the virgin rail site who run trains between london and manchester but from shoeburyness to Manchester Piccadilly was 222 quid for a return for 2 adults. which is over the odds and im sure you will get much cheaper.

Your best bet is ring national rail ticket office or your local ticket office and get quotes from them mate, you will still get it a little bit cheaper if you book before but at this late date it wont be much cheaper.

Cheers mate, is a real help and i would stay over night but for work at 12 the next morning. Could you advice me on the bus and tram please? i may even walk to the ground if we get up to manchester at a decent time.

Thanks again.

All the buses go from Piccadilly Gardens, which as the name suggests is a 3-4min walk from the train station.

Follow the fans, or get any of:
252, 253, 254, 525, 256, 257, 17, 114 and 236

The metrolink is the way I'd personally choose. From Piccadilly Station (tram station is under the train station) you want to be going to either Altringham or Eccles. The altringham branch goes to Old Trafford, and is very busy, but very convenient. The Eccles branch goes to both Pomona and Exchange Quay, get off at either, get on at Exchange Quay after the game. More of a walk to the ground but quieter (but not quiet) on the day. They are well signposted but best to print off a map to help you out.

Why not try the Essex base of the Manchester United fan club you might be able to get a coach with those guys up to Manchester and back, contact details are as follows

Essex
SHOEBURYNESS, SOUTH END AND DISTRICT

Branch Secretary: Bob Lambert, 23 Royal Oak Drive, Wickford, Essex, SS11 8NT. Tel: 01268 560168.
