(Hopefully as we are in a bit of a news lull the MODS will be ok with this sitting in Chit Chat for a bit)
SUEPA for some time now has proudly boasted about being the largest former players group in the UK ... if not the world, and increasingly what we do is being embraced by the club and gaining a wider following.
We currently have 517 ex-player/former coaching staff members - with Plymouth Argyle having for quite a while been second with circa 360.
However, there are new kids on the block - AFC Wimbledon have grown significantly over the past 18 months, and last week they announced their 500th member. Like us they include first and reserve team players plus coaching staff - though they do also allow former ladies team members to join (something we have not yet considered - their ladies team is much more established than ours - circa 70 ladies are included in their 500 total).
SUEPA focus of late has been on some key project work - Match for Micky, Box Corridor prints, Former Players Club meetings, Bench for Barks, and currently what is proving to be the biggest time-investment yet re the soon-to-be-out 'Roots & All' book. There are only so many hours in the day, and so focus of late has been shifted away from growing membership, something I'm keen to now pay more attention to again.
It also of course gets harder to grow the bigger we get as many of the players not yet on board are a bit more challenging to contact. Nevertheless there will still be some easy wins out there ... although often ones you think will readily come on board take some time (our latest joiner Callum Powell being a prime example)
We currently have 67% of the former first team players still alive in SUEPA, and for 16 past seasons (mostly 1970s and 1980s) we have every player still alive having agreed to join SUEPA (just two on tracking them down have so far refused!). It's free, many once joined are 'dormant', but plenty of others have taken an active interest - we've had well over 100 different ex player guests at Roots Hall since starting in 2018, and our Former Player Club meetings are popular too.
It is mostly since the 2010/11 season that we have a bit of a membership gap - there are 110 first team ex players from then to date who are not in SUEPA. And it is here specifically that I would love some help.
I have had what are termed 'SUEPA Agent' help from a few dedicated individuals over the years who have provided me with leads - whether it be a 'warm lead' in terms of personal contact with them (or via a friend) or a 'colder lead' where I am given details of a social media account they are active, or any lead 'heat' in between. It tends to be easier if I am given the lead as I can then follow up with them on our official SUEPA account (ie rather than a personal contact)
What I am looking for is an individual or two, with a bit of spare time and some dedication (and interest in it all), to help obtain leads that can be followed up on. Normal pay rates apply - ie zero, though you do get a warm fuzzy feeling each time a success is achieved.
So, are there any SZ'ers out there willing to help please? Feel free to DM me or message on here and then I'll follow up with you
We need to keep the Wombles at bay!
Cheers, Andy
