Help Please! Something wrong with my computer

Downloaded a torrent file afew days ago and my computer just restarted itself. when it came back on, a pop up keeps coming up in my toolbar saying "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recomended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss.Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware!"So I clicked on this and nothing happens. For what its worth, i'm now thinking this itself is somesort of fake. My internet explorer has set itself to google and when I search for something on it, if I click on a link, that website doesnt come up, I just get a load of pop-ups. I cant run my football manager game as it just freezes the whole computer so I have to switch it off. Its now saying java isnt enabled when I think it is so I cant get on facebook and other things. Basicaly, I cant do anything! I ran an Ad-Aware programe which tetected 12 critical files which then prompted me to delete them which I did but its still no better. Can anybody help me?

You have a Trojan by the sounds of things. I'm not a complete genius with sorting these things out, so I won't attempt to give any advice in case it's useless - sure you'll get some better direction tomorrow. Until then, don't do any online financial transactions...!

AVG 8

that will sort it mate

not necessarily, AVG is good but you may well have to get some specialist anti-spyware software. If AVG lets you know the type of trojan/virus you have then that is a good start and google will help you work out how to get rid of it

you can change your default page in IE, in tools, general.....

it may have overwritten it with a rogue site. You can change it back to something more useful hopefully.

I use spysweeper aswell as AVG. I would not recommend Norton as your PC will run like a dog with 2 legs.

also, i assume you know where the torrent file was downloaded from (mininova etc etc) so head over there if possible and check the comments threads as it might help. also you could warn people from downloading that torrent if you reckon it's infected

Argh this is a nightmare. I downloaded AVG8, it found the virus and prompted me to continue to remove it and install the sortware which I did but the installation failed due to 3 errors and 2 warnings.

exactly the same thing happened to me today. Spent ages trying to hunt it down, and finally did a system restore and reset to how it was on Friday and it was fixed.... Worth a go.

Go to Control Panel, performance and maintainance and do a system restore.

Yeh that's what i'm going to have to do I think. Problem is, i'm gonna lose everything on my computer so i'm going to need to transfer some stuff to something else first and transfer it back once ive done the system restore.
