Why has NICE decided to fund a ridiculously expensive drug for a niche patient population #topical #ShareMyThesis

because of patient and political pressure to treat rarity as something special. Also people with rare conditions in general have absolutely no other treatment option.

I do feel for people with rare conditions, because the R&D costs are recouped over a smaller market and therefore drugs are really expensive per patient. NICE probably would have rejected eculizumab so the govt made them set up a new process to deal with treatments for (orphan drugs). I can't really discuss more about eculizumab because of my work.
