Heffernan

shrimpereeee

First XI
I apologise if this has already been posted but according to today's echo we have been unsuccessful in trying to lure Tom Heffernan from Doncaster and won't be making any further bids for his services.

This says a lot about the calibre of striker we are looking for.

Get used to it..

That will be the spiel right up until the eleventh hour..

Paul Heffernan would've been a great signing, PotM in L1 I believe for December and 6 in 6 games. Nice to see we're actually trying to get a GOALSCORER in to relieve the pressure on Eastwood's shoulders (I am assuming the club were looking at him as a partner for Freddy and not a replacement). Any idea on the size of the bid? If I were RM I'd probably go as high as £350k but I would imagine Doncaster would be looking for double that.

With a strike rate of just under a goal every other game (over 120 appearances), he'd do for me.

What I'm least looking forward to is the end of the window when Tilly and Brush are accused of either bringing no-one in (because we couldn't get the players we wanted for reasonable figures) or bringing in rubbish players (because we couldn't get the players we wanted for reasonable figures).

When you then start to think about the type of players we'd bring in if it weren't for their clubs asking for unreasonable figures, it's all quite depressing.

Any reputable striker in the championship is not going to come anywhere near us so unfortunately we have to realise that Freddie's replacement/partner is going to come from a league 1 or 2 club.

To be fair, the piece in the Echo does not actually report that. These are RM's words:

"Paul was someone we had on our list of targets. We are no longer interested in him though".

This MIGHT be because a bid has been turned down or it might be because of some other reason. The word "bid" is not even mentioned in the article.

I'm not criticising this in any way, I'm glad to see we're looking at the right type of people because Heffernan is a class player and would do well, and it's also pleasing to see we're not living outside of our means putting in ridiculous bids a la Leeds. It's just fruitless placing a bid that will more than likely be rejected straight out. We're renowned for it and to be honest it's a bit of a joke.

Ron Martin has campaigned against Derby making stupid bids for Eastwood in the last window, yet we've already put in pretty measly bids for the star players of Motherwell and Cork City... Just seems a tad hypocritical.

Bottom line is that, quite frankly, these types of players are out of the question until the Stadium gets built and our revenue is that much better.

Sadly I think you're right.

I feel for the boys up top though.

If they sign a player on the cheap from a lower league, the player isn't good enough and we should be aiming higher.

If they aim higher, find a special player, one that has the credentials and would suit our team, then we can't afford the fee, we can't afford the wages and the player doesn't want to come.

If they sign a second-choice player (because they can't get anyone else) and they don't produce, then they've "cocked up". Even the fans who thought they looked good when they first sign complain that Tilson's "f%cked up there!"

And if they don't put in a bid for some of the targets we'd really like (even an unrealistic opening shot) then, and I'm sure I'm quoting someone (not you, btw), they're sitting on their arses doing nothing!

Here's to the wisdom of Shrimperzone over the next few weeks!
