MatchID:  21833310
Arena:  Roots Hall
Crowd:  3922

The crowd of 3922 turning up at Roots Hall today were greeted by some nasty showers of rain. Southend started off with a 4-3-3 lineup. The following players had been chosen: Tanner - Gupta, Hunter, Farrell, Gerrard - Bhayani, McArthur, Dunbar - Collins, Ingalls, Spaul.

Felchester had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. Lineup: Harris - Clarke, Gould, Lal, Fitz-Simon - Kinnell, Lane, Gorman, Reidfurd - Airlie, Das.

It was an obvious ambition of Southend to attack on the flanks. Kirk Dunbar of Southend received a yellow card in the 20:th minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Many thought James Hunter ought to have been awarded a penalty shot in the 21st minute, as he went down trying to circle the visitors keeper Anthony Harris. The terraces were silenced in the 22nd minute as Felchester´s Brent Clarke put the guests ahead 0 - 1, following an attack from the right. Southend had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation was down to poor. The game was characterized by rough play and many physical challenges. Peter Gerrard showed great heart and had a good game. After the ball got lifted in from the left Duncan Airlie was on his own in the home side´s penalty area 38 minutes into the game, and should have scored, but missed, probably due to lack of concentration. The teams went for a half-time break at 0 - 1. Felchester held the ball, with a clear 73 percent possession rate.

The Southend players spent the half-time break getting a rerun of the teams tactical organization and regained a passable organisation. Felchester came close to extending their lead as Siraj Das delivered a long range shot from the right but the angle was too sharp, and the shot hit the side of the goal. In the games 57:th minute Felchester´s Clyde Reidfurd fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee booked Clyde Reidfurd for taking a dive. After 71 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for Siraj Das who increased Felchester´s lead to 0 - 2. Southend seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and were down to the inadequate level of organisation. There wasn´t much opportunity for rapid movements this wet day, which hindered Jonathan Kinnell in particular. Felchester had, after 75 minutes of the game, worked the left side industriously, creating several opportunities to add to their lead, but somehow didn´t achieve closure. In the 78:th minute Felchesters Duncan Airlie received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first. The Southend player was James Hunter who had to be helped off the pitch, unable to finish the game, but Aaditya Nagendra came in to finish the match. The referee showed Southends George Farrell the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. The player down was Jonathan Kinnell. The Felchester bench looked worried a while but in the end he managed to get up. The visitors Siraj Das took advantage of an error due to a misunderstanding between the home side´s goalie and central backs in the 86:th minute. 0 - 3 for Felchester. Felchester will have to do without Lee Gould for a time due to a bad foot injury. He was substituted by Ernst van Trigt. Felchester, bringing the final ball possession rate to 88 percent, dominated the battle.

Southend´s best player was Peter Gerrard. Michael Spaul was a disappointment, however. The most dominating Felchester player was without a doubt Siraj Das. Ernst van Trigt on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 0 - 3.

25/06/2004 Comment on next season salaries
As can now be seen from the "Next season salary" feature added earlier today, we are for next season reinstating the salary discount previously given to the winger skill and added a similar discount for passing skill and a minor discount on defending skill. Salaries are one way of many that we use to encourage training of these neglected skills. Also, the keeper formula in use this season had some bizarre effects with giving too low salaries for the super keepers. Next season, the salary of the best keepers in the world will be roughly the same as the salary of the best midfielders or strikers in the world. We will not make any changes to current season's salaries. The new salaries are for next season.

Can somebody explain this clearly about the training of neglected skills please?

From what I see on the conferences they are making it harder to train wingers becuase they are going to make the wages go up for wingers to the norm.

Ulf Pettersson came close to putting the visiting team one up in the 56:th minute, following a solo raid down the middle, but Thord Knutsson managed to tip the ball to a corner. Itay Tapuz of Superstars received a yellow card in the 61st minute for unsportsmanlike behaviour. After 66 minutes Ledley Harris made a speedy advance and dropped the ball to Andy Gazier who shuffled the ball past the keeper. The score was now 3 - 4. Superstars held the ball, with a clear 59 percent possession rate.

Superstars´s best player was Dwight Milton. Scott Tressider on the other hand, had a terrible day. The most dominating United player was without a doubt Burt Adolphus. However, Allen MacCorkindale made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 3 - 4.
