A day we should all feel proud to display our nationality and allegiance, Happy St George's Day one and all.

Much more importantly, a very happy birthday to Captain Sensible. I think, anyway. I know he was born on one of the saints day. George or David or something. But still, I like his hats.

Yeah, an Israeli born Roman soldier certainly reminds me of all that's great about my country.

It's also El Dia de Sant Jordi here in Catalonia where the custom is for men to give their partner a rose and for women to give a book.Sexist perhaps but good news for both industries.

Yeah, an Israeli born Roman soldier certainly reminds me of all that's great about my country.

Not sure what the relevance of who St George was ,its just a day to celebrate national pride.

Its like saying the Irish celebrate St Patricks day as they are so thankful there are no snakes in Ireland.

Personally for me its all a bit meh. If I had the day off Id probably care more....

I wouldn't sweat it - the PC brigade will soon class it as racist and ban it for offending some benefit claiming imigrant that shouldn't even be here. Then you can go dampen someone else's parade - what about Christmas, I'm sure the kids need to be told it's just a usurped pagan festival.

There's nought wrong with having a day to celebrate our country, even if the origins aren't factually correct. Sometimes good intentions are enough. I like the fact we have a day to celebrate our country, I just wish we took to it a bit more (and I don't just mean getting ****ed up) - maybe it's lack of national pride that stops us!

this would have more gravitas if it hadn't started with immigrant bashing so early into the rant. Sometimes just good intensions are enough!
Happy St George's day one and all, we have a lot to be proud of.

I heard earlier on the radio that St David's Day is a BH in Wales, St Andrew's in Scotland and St Patrick's in Ireland - if that's true, then St George's Day ought to be one in England!

Happy St George's Day!
I suspect this day is seen as something of an embarrassment to many on the left though IMO if the flag of St George and English patriotism is sometimes hijacked by the far right, then it is at least partly the fault by left-wing English people who allow them to do so.
St Andrew is also the patron saint of Greece, Romania, Russia and Ukraine and he was born in what is modern day Israel and almost certainly never set foot in the land of Cluniemore yet this is never raised as an obstacle to his birthday being set as a day to celebrate all things Scottish.

St. Andrews Day is not a public holiday in Scotland, despite the inferences of even the finest of diaries. In fact they celebrate that day a lot less than the English do for St. Georges Day.

The St Andrews Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007 was passed by the Scottish Parliament on 29 November 2006, and received Royal Assent on 15 January 2007.

I wonder what would happen of the entire country refused to work? What if we all rang in sick?
