There were the grimmest of times in the mid-80's.
Though that happy pic on the pitch at Peterborough United brings back memories of a wonderful day out - and the start of unprecedented success.

I like this bit the most. How about that for a home record.

Southend won their first ever major trophy as a Football League club. The team was built on a rock solid defence and an amazing home record. The team won nineteen and drew four of its 23 home games and in the ten home games between August 22nd and November 15th didn’t even concede a League goal at Roots Hall. Goalkeeper Mervyn Cawston went 985 minutes unbeaten in home games until Bradford City’s Bobby Campbell finally ended the run. It was two points for a win in those days, but under the present system, Southend would have clocked up a staggering 97 points as they headed the table from the likes of Lincoln City,

Great side. Derek Spence, Keith Mercer, Tony Hadley and Alan Moody, Ron Pountney... and those "battles" with Lincoln City - home and away!!!!

Great and not so great memories.

Not long before Anton Johnson came on the scene at SUFC, as a youth, I played for Priory Athletic. Managed by Dave Johnson (Anton's brother) and Dave Goody (father of David Goody who's written [co-written?] a couple of books on SUFC), I strenuously deny that Anton had anything to do with the lovely kit we had at Priory Ath:smile:. DG if you see this and have the pictures of us collecting the league cup at RH from Dave Smith please post them!

Im old enough to remember going to those games, but young enough not to really have taken it all in.

Main memory is that Anton Otulakowski was my favourite player around then, mainly because having a foreign player was exciting. I was also too young to know he was born in England

I remember seeing Otulakowski do his handstand throw in trick, but did he ever do it in a competitive game?

Had to laugh at the team photo with Dick Bate as manager. It reminded me of a headline in a newspaper I saw, after he joined the FA. It read "Dick Bates long balls will wreck football". I kid you not.
