gunman on the loose in Cumbria

Was just watching this on the news, some scary ****, don't think I'd be feeling particularly comfortable living in Boot at this time!

Wonder why he did it?

Police believe they have found the gunman's (Derrick Bird) body in woods....

1404 BST

Police hunting Derrick Bird say they believe they have found his body in a wood near the village of Boot.

Been chatting with a friend about this today....

Check out this clip of Charlie Brooker explaining in 2 and a half minutes how 24 hour news coverage that sensationalises these episodes encourages their repetition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PezlFNTGWv4

"Every time we see intense saturation coverage of a mass murder, we expect to see one or two more within a week."

Then, on the BBC R4 6pm bulletin an alleged "psychological profile" of "the typical loner" who guns down people. He will have failed at school, live with his Mum, been rejected in love or sexually, or feel overlooked for promotion. He will become obsessed with guns and then go out and kill lots... See more of people before shooting himself in "an elaborate suicide ritual" in which he will "test his masculinity...to destruction!"

Every word was emphasised and sending a powerful message to the next man teetering on the edge ...come on if you think your hard enough. Awful, sloppy, dangerous reporting.

Have to agree here. So far the information on the shooter has showed that the only type he was was living on his own and owned a gun . Which teh media tend to shy away from as they are totally random . Theres nothing worse the possibly of anyone doing this tragic and hidieous action.

A tragic event but I think we have to be thankful that these incidents are very rare in our society, once every 10 years or so.

I also think we have to think very carefully about any amendments to the laws on gun ownership. Despite tightening gun ownership in the UK since Hungerford and Dunblane, the 3 massacres, including this one today, have been perpretratated by people legally holding firearms.

Whilst repeating how tragic this event is we should still be looking to concentrate on ridding the country of illegal firearms.

Whilst watching the report on the BBC I recall some nob say something along the lines of

"We don't want to tighten the restrictions on gun law as it means we won't be able to host further Olympic games or allow people to claim their heritage"

What a load of utter bollocks. Think this man needs a smack in the face and to sort his priorities out. What is more important - athletics or the taking of the lives of innocent people on a mass scale. What an utter ****.

one of those days when I avoid the news, the absolute horror of this can not be imagined in any way
