GSM - Record For Most Goals Scored By A Defender In One Season?

Does anybody know what the record is for most goals scored by a defender in one season?

I believe Steve Bruce got 19 in one season in all competition. Is that the record for all competitions?

Gus has 17 now, and all of them scored in league games. Is 17 is a record for just the league?

It did and 11 of them were penalties.

Only 13 goals overall were in the league, with the others were scored in the league cup and Europe.

For us I think Rob Newmans first season playing for us 97/98 (although a terrible season) he managed to be top scorer I think with 9 or 10

Happy to be corrected but I think he was top.

Also honourable mention to when Adam Barrett joined SUFC he was getting so many goals from headers and stuff in the box until many teams cottoned on to him.

When people talk about records, I think some forget we are now non-league. Probably difficult to discover who holds the record at various levels but comparing him to Argentinian and Dutch internationals is probably not appropriate.

In relation to the names mentioned on this thread already, all of Adam Barrett's 11 goals in 2004/05 were in the league; Rob Newman scored 8 in 1998/99 (7 in the league) and Leon Cort's best season was 7 in 2002/03 (6 in the league).

A couple of other notable mentions in terms of Southend United history off the top of my head: Bilel Mohsni scored 13 in 2011/12, all of which were in the league (although some would be whilst playing further up-field), and full-back Jimmy Evans netted 10 penalties in 1921/22 (from 11 attempts).

On a cautionary note, as commendable as Gus Scott-Morriss' record is, he's not really a defender in the same sense as many of those former players that have been mentioned. He's regularly pushed up beyond some of our midfield players (even when we've deployed four at the back; against Forest Green Rovers, for instance, his average position was ahead of Morton and inside FGR territory), despite his penchant for arriving late in the penalty area.
