What squad in our history do you think was the best, the most talented. Although they never won anything I'm going for the squad of 93/94 with Barry fry at the helm... he assembled a squad that was destined for the premier league. Probably full of the most talented players to wear the Southend shirt. Admittedly they fell away badly second half of the season.. But the 1st half they were unstoppable..over to you.

You could say that squad had some of the most disloyal players to wear a Southend shirt .

Looking at the list.. surely it was 2005/2006 season when the "champions league" was "Won":smile:

90-92

Royce, Austin, Powell, Prior, K. Jones, Butler, Ling and Angell all went onto play Premiership football, the first four being regulars in top half teams. In addition Pat Scully was an international, Ian Benjamin had previously played top flight football and Ansah and Tilson were amongst our greatest ever players and more than held their own in that company.

That Royce and Ling weren't even first choices says how good that squad was.

The 93-94 squad under Judas were a more exciting team due to the all out attack tactics but that 91-92 team was greatness personified.

Can't disagree with any of that

I think a lot of this thread's votes are going to show the average age of this site. A lot of the choices where sadly before my time

I think age is a factor here too. The Tilson team is getting a lot of votes, but can't be compared with either the Webb promotion (90/91) side or Fry's side before he left - it's not even close.

I don't know about before 1990 - maybe there was a better side some way back.

The team of the 90's played at a higher level so would have to assume were of a better standard than pre 90's who mostly played in the 4th tier.. Coming up against much weaker opposition

I've made s schoolboy error and put the wrong date in the poll.. Should be 1993/94 instead of 1992/93..., I think everyone knows the team I meant though..sorry

Disloyal? Yes certainly but I can only assume that the 2005/6 L1 title-winning squad are only leading this poll because some supporters won't have seen the 1993/4 team in the flesh. For me that side was the most talented I've seen in my 27 years supporting Southend United and had Fry not jumped ship and taken half the team with him I know we could have got to the Premier League.
