Grant in the centre of midfield

RettendonCB

Newbie
Today we saw Anthony Grant play easily his best game for Southend... in centre midfield. Now when he arrived at SOuthend it was clear he poses little attacking threat, yet we play him right wring ahead of Francis who clearly is the best crosser of the ball we have here. However because TIlson likes JFC and obviously Macca must play, he has to find a place for Grant because he is on high wages.

However surely after todays game where Betsy was better than Grant is at right wing.... and Francis is a lot more creative than Betsy, it is time to play Grant in his natural position and create competetion for centre midfield places.

Not sure I'd agree that was Grant's best performance, he was immense against Chelsea in both games and has been pretty consistently good ever since.

think grant needs to sit back in centre defence with macca pushing forward. think for next game, you've gotta sit jeff out. francis on the right, betsy on the left. get some good crosses in and a bit of creativity...but i'm, drunk so what do i no!

I didn't like Grant last season or the beginning of the season but since the Chelsea game he has really impressed me and now I think he is one of our best players, I'm guessing against Chelsea there was the extra motivation and since then he's had the confidence

I have been really pleased with Grant this year, but why on Earth would you change they way we have been playing, and our system, not happy with all our winning??

Grant is a central midfielder but I think Macca and JFC are better and are a good partnership. I'd have Grant as our 3rd choice central midfielder and I'd rather have Francis or Betsy on the wing than Grant, at least in home games.

Grant is a solid player and he has played very well recently. I think he deserves a chant of his own. ideas?

i agree it was one of his better games of the season but i dont know how you think franny is our best crosser of the ball. He cant get it in the air and when he does it usually goes too deep or hite the first man.

He whipped in a couple of beauties yesterday, unfortunately no-one got on the end of them though!

Longer term I think that it'd be worth examining the possibility of using a 4-3-3 formation. We've had so few wide men produce the goods in recent years while playing 4-4-2, and the exceptions to the rule have been players like Gower and HRK who can have an effect when played through the middle but with license to roam.

We have four central midfielders competing for places, with O'Keefe hopefully set to join them, and the extra man up front allows us the scope to include the likes of Laurent and Walker with greater freedom of movement than they generally enjoy in a 4-4-2. I think we might well get greater productivity from a mobile three man front line than from underperforming wingers in a 4-4-2.
