Anybody else see this last night? Any thoughts?

It raised alot of interesting points about Club v Country, foreign players in the premier league, the press and expectations.

The expectation one really got my attention. We do have such high expectations of our team, apart from winning the world cup once, we have a rubbish record in tournaments. Other teams seem to have much more realistic expectations yet we seem to expect to win everything yet have a fairly poor record.

Think it was on ITV4 Rich, I believe they were also going to repeat his fly on the wall documentary which included England losing to Holland and failing to qualify for USA 1994.

It was on ITV after the news last night.

Showed a few clips of the documentary about his own time as England Manager too, which I think is also going to be repeated soon. Showed the clips of us getting knocked out by Holland and Taylor losing it with the officials.

I agree with you about unrealistic expectations though I would say your comment about a rubbish record in tournaments falls into the same trap.
We've had quite few quarter final placings which many countries would be happy with - but because we think anything less than winning is failure we regard that as a poor record.
I actually think or European Championship record is poorer than our World Cup record given that fewer teams are involved.

wouldnt say england have that bad a record! missed out on euro 08 and world cup 94 but apart from that when at a major tornament you lot normally get to the SF if not the very least the QF.. only suprising thing maybe is that england havnt reached more finals but your horrific record on penalties is a major catalyst for that..

i watched most the documentary (despite hating Graham Taylor as a pundit) and from an outside view would agree on the club vs country argument; the number of foreigners in Premier League; and the media more than anything expect too much!

IMO yes expect england to get to the semis because thats where you should be competing.. but winning every tornament is ridiculous notion considering the number of other strong teams/countries competing in these tournaments...

Tennents have a very annoying radio ad running this week.
It's a take on the famous Norwegian tv commentary when they beat England in 1981 - story & listen here

Interesting that if Scotland do keep up their excellent home form in qualifiers tomorrow, they'll already be 5pts clear of Norway! Thankfully, the Scotland game is 3pm whereas England is 5:15 so there will be no clashing in terms of match coverage in the pubs this week (I remember back a year ago when it was Scotland v Ukraine & England v Croatia and it was a total nightmare trying to get to see England anyway, even in places with ability to show 2 games at once!)

well i have the usual problem of southend and scotland kicking off at the same time... so be doing my normal of Sky+ ing the scotland game, go and watch southend and rush back home to watch scotland whilst hoping no one tells me the score!

yer great home record in the qualifers but all the perfomances (friendly and competitive games) under George Burley doesnt inspire.. think we may struggle!

Not a real problem though is it?
Even if England had won the last 3 World Cups & Euros I'd still put Southend in front of them!

well yer it is to me.. i know a lot of people on here would go club before country.. i think their equally important

however.. i would never stay away from a southend game to watch scotland on tele!

I did, a few years back. I had the option of going to the Canvey - Southend FA cup game that we won 3-2 or stay at home in hope that Scotland will get a result in Holland to qualify for Euro 2004. I chose the latter, and saw us get stuffed 6-0.

actually so did.. although i dont think i got a ticket in the ballot for the southend game anyway... 1 nil after 1st leg.. to lose like was gut wrenching... even tuning into the last 15mins of southend game and seeing jay smith curl in a last minute beauty.. did little to improve my mood!
