The Business
I was on the platform today as always on my way to work. As I walked along the platform I noticed a family set to go on holiday laiden with suitcases.

Nothing unusual there as my stop is only ten mins or so from Gatwick.

However the family was made up of the Mum & Dad and the two kids. Now the kids I dont personally know but were 18-21 sort of age group. As I walked past the Dad said "It will be nice to have the four of us for the 2 weeks".

Now - And I say this with no disrepect to Dad of DtS but at 18-21 the thought of going away with him would not really have appealed. In contrast now adays I would gladly go away with him. I had my first week away with my mates soon after I was 16 and I never looked back.

My question today is - Are these kids a bit sad to go away with there parents at this age or is it fair enough?

DtS

I still go on holiday with my parents and i'm 24. I dont think im sad. :D

i haven't been away with the parents for a couple of years (im 22) but when we go skiing it's as a family... no way could i afford it as a student and i really enjoy being with the family for a couple of weeks and then to do a holiday with the lads

22? Way too young to have that sig.:p

MtS for one I'd imagine.

:D

Erm, does "going abroad to see my parents" count? I do that - which amounts to a free holiday abroad with my parents. Well, I say "free", but I have to pay for the flights, I suppose.

Hoping to be spending some time in Singapore with the folks if they get their act together in the not too distant future.

And to clarify for OS: I have never knowingly used the word "spiffing" in conversation.

:guns:

i dont think theres anything wrong with it.

Not sure about all this 'spending time together stuff" though.

When i was 16-18 i went to Corfu with my parents every year, met up with mates out there, and didn see my parents for 2 weeks, except at feeding time. So all in all, free holiday, yet still stayed out till 6am or so having a good razzle, all i had to take with me was Beer monies

I'm 19 and hve the option of going on holiday with them this year, but don't really fancy it. Saying that I'm a little tempted as it means I can get away for free which is something I can't afford to do at the moment so instead I'm staying here and plan to be working all summer.Joy.

Depends on the situation really.

- If you are in the 18-22 age group and you choose to go away with your parents over going away with your mates then yes you are rather sad, especially if money is not an issue to you.

- If you choose to go away with your parents instead of your mates because you cant afford a holiday with your friends and you are getting a freebie with your parents then great.

Thing is it also depends on how cool your parents are. If they are super geeks and want to take you backpacking with a hiking stick in wellies then I would say that this is a definate no no.
On the other hand if they are super cool and take you on a beach holiday where you spend all day in the sun and all evening having a meal and getting pi55ed with them then this is defintely ok. Also depends on siblings, are they close in age to you and do you get on well enough to go off and meet other young people etc etc.

Personally I dont think it is a problem as my parents are both a good laugh. They are however seperated but I would go away with either now. I am going away with my mum for a week to Tenerife next month and am really looking forward to it. Although, I have already been to Ayia Napa for 2 weeks with my mates so I got the best of both worlds really.

Yep depends on age.

When I was carefree and single I would never have gone on holiday with them. When you get older with kids things change and having parents around is actually useful.

Wouldnt go away with mine, but went away with the inlaws last year and the extra pairs of hands looking after our 3 year old whilst going snorkelling (us not 3 year old) was handy.

Nothing wrong with it whatsoever.
When I was that age I went on holidays with the parents as well as going away with my mates.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it if you all get along well.

I would have a slight problem with having to dig them up but thats another story.

For the younger ones:
If you get the opportunity, then take it.
Its only when one of them dies that you might start thinking I could have spent more time with them.

I personally don't see that big of a problem with going on vacation with my parents. Sure, I'd almost always choose to go on a trip with my friends if I had the option, but honestly if you can get enough vacation time from work you can probably do both. The destinations would also make a huge difference, if my parents were going to someplace like Australia and my friends were heading to somewhere like L.A., it would be a very easy decision.
