Goals from Midfield

Just an aside to the defensive problems which conceding 3 goals a game means you wont win anything is that we need to also start getting more goals from midfield. Currently after 11 LEAGUE games just one scored V Norwich by Gower. Players like Maher, Gutts and Hunt are only going to get you 1 or 2 a year each which leaves Gower as the only realistic player who can get you goals. They may be defensive players but then why do we concede so many? Surely we need someone who can bang a few in to ease the burden on Freddie's shoulders.

Agreed, but Maher came very close on Friday with a superb effort with the outside of his right foot. It deserved to go in.

Also, I think the rest of the strikers need to chip in more regularly...

I think alot of people on these boards all agree that, as much as Gutts and Hunt have done Southend a supurb service and/or put in 110%, we are in need of a strong attacking midfielder. I think its a huge huge blow that we didn't get Robinson from Swansea.

A 19 year old from some premiership reserve team will not help the cause that much. A permenant experianced proven player is desperatlly needed. Gower drifted in and out so much against Coventry. If hes not there to turn it on, Kev is left to pick up the pieces in all midfield departments. Kev's influence is sometimes unrealised by many of the Southend faithful, not many fans know life without him as he has been a permanant player for the last 5+ years.

I think your right.....Lets face facts we have a number of things that we need to improve on at the moment.

1) No goals from strikers other than Freddy.
2) Defence looks like conceding every set peice
3) No goals from midfield
4) Gutts well off form and no replacement

Could go on. All I would add is no-one is that bad all season and I am sure Tilly will get it right.

Matt Harrold scored at West Brom, however one goal from our strikers other than Freddy is not a great return.

Last season we were fortunate enough in that all our outfield players except Hunt & Jupp scored. Plus we had a settled front pairing of Eastwood & Goater. We've not really had a settled front two thus far, although the Eastwood/Harrold partnership shows signs promise.

Fair call but one league goal from the sum total of Ricketts, Hooper, Harrold, Paynter is not much....

Suppose Bradders scored against Sunderland too.....

Still poor return though. Freddy is a god but cant be expected to do it week in week out.

i agree, however i really think we are going to have to put up with players getting a couple of goals... hopefully enough to survive for next season and then we can look at bolstering our attack....

i reckon from our first 11 on friday we will get in the league.

freddy - 15
harrold - 6
gower - 6
maher - 4 (looks like he has really worked on his shooting)
barrett - 3
gutts - 3
efe/clarke/spinner - 2
hammell - 2
francis -1
hunt - 1

i thinnk all our outfield players this season look like they can get goals. francis and hammell look willing to shoot on sight, hunt might get 1 or 2 from set pieces (as he did against brighton) and so i dont think it is all doom and gloom. a proven goal scorer will cos a shed load of mulah (its why freddy is so highly valued), and so for this season at least i think tilly will really work at getting goals from all areas of the pitch

saying that, yet again maher wants to take every free kick... there was a chance on friday when it was all set up for a left footer (hammell), yet again maher overruled and banged it straight into the south stand. please kev let hammell have a crack, we have already see what he can do!

I hope you're right that 43 goals will be enough to keep us up, because I don't! Either we need 13 own goals or you might need to add 1 to each of those above, plus hope for another couple from subs.....

Lets hope so cos if we don't we'll be back in League One next season.

a rough glance at previous years tables suggest that you can survive with 45-50 goals. i agree though that with our defence as leaky as it is at the moment then that doesnt look high enough. we have scored 11 in 11. so therefore suggests we are looking to get 46 at the moment. perhaps my estimates earlier were a little low. freddy is on track to make over 20, so it probably reminds us how vital it is that we keep him this season. hopefully if harrold continues to impress then he might be able to bag a few more... and subs from bradders, jcr and hooper might see a few more

We finished bottom in 1996/97 season as we only score 42 goals but leak in 86! we are on way doing this again if we carry on like that.
