So, here we go again ......... new season, new chances ..........

We (Southend United) will need to score around 70+ goals to be in with a shout of automatic promotion. So do we have the players in the team to provide us with that fire power?

Below is a very rough calculation ........

Bentley/Smith - 0
White - 1
Prosser - 2
Phillips - 4
Coker - 1

Contribution from defenders = 8

Timlin - 5
Straker - 3
Leonard - 4
Laird - 4
Atkinson - 4
Clifford - 4

Contribution from midfield = 24

That would leave the strike force to generate about 40 goals between them. Or put another way, one of the strikers would have to score 1 goal almost every league game. Is that possible?

No mention of Hurst , reckon he's good for 6 , and if Leonard gets a decent run in the team I think he could quite easily make double figures . So that's another 12 , so if strikers can nick 30 between them we should be fine:smile:

A defender will "step up" and get 6 this season, from set pieces and such.
Hurst will get a good 10 or more as he has improved all the time he has been with us and now has confidence to take on players and to shoot.
Timlin will likely get a few more than your assessment.
BBBC and Fred can get 30+ between them with decent service; and I expect whoever to take the pens to be nearer 20.
A decent loan striker must be expecting to bag 15+ for us or they would drop down the leagues.

Phillips IF he stays fit could hit double figures from the back though I think he misses Ryan Hall's pinpoint delivery (indeed the whole team does). Straker will get 30-35 so that leaves just a few between the rest of the team.

I admire your optimism .... Phillips getting double figures and Straker with 30+ goals. Trouble is that such a strike rate would probably mean him (Straker) leaving come Christmas for somewhere like Palace, Hull or Bolton. I think I'll stick with an estimate of 3 for the time being.

So it could be ........

Bentley/Smith - 0
White - 1
Prosser - 2
Phillips - 4
Coker - 1

Contribution from defenders = 8

Timlin - 5
Straker - 3
Leonard - 4
Laird - 4
Atkinson - 4
Clifford - 4
Hurst - 4
Contribution from midfield = 28

Leaving the strikers to get 32 between them.

Eastwood - 8
Corr - 12
Reid - 8
A.N. Other - 4

All these figures still rely heavily upon the midfield and defence regularly weighing in with goals which seems quite unlikely.
