Goalkeeping Situation

Obviously with everything going so well at the moment something is bound to go wrong (9,000 Blues' fans thinking we just have to turn up on Friday being one of them) but I am concerned by Darrly's cover. As well know 'keepers get sent off, get injured and yet still we take a chance and get way with it.

How "fit" is Bart and is there anyone else who could be on the bench? The irony is the two outfield "keepers" we have are both injured - Spinner and Mark Bentley!

I overhead George Michael saying he thought it was well fit

It is slightly worrying, especially since Bentley is injured...
but I'm not going to worry about it until it happens!

The trouble is I think the club think that way as well.

Stuart Pearce summed it up best for me.

He adopts the same policy as we do, prefering to have an extra outfield player on the bench. His argument is that, having looked at stats relating to the number of goalkeepers getting sent off/injured and the number of goals subsequently conceded as a result of having a non-keeper in goal, the neglible risk is simply not one worth planning for.

I think its stupid and a risk that doesn't need to be taken. Why not sign Jamie Young on loan for the rest of the season? Its hardly because we don't want to use all our loans up as we've got 7 left!

We will regret it bigtime if something happens.

there is no way you could play with the guy who has been playing in goal for the reserves (Joe Welch) - you might as well play with 11 outfield players instead, he is hopeless!

This is NOT the time to be taking avoidable risks.

If we don't make it this year we may never, ever be in this position again. Get someone in on loan now.

I dont see this as a problem at all. Its very rare that we get a Goalie sent off or injured during a game and if Flavs gets injured during a training session then we just bring in a goalkeeper on loan.

I dont see the point on wasting money on a loan Goalie who we'll pay to sit on the bench for a month.

"Wasting money?"

Money well spent.

Four outfield subs is sufficient and will cover all eventualities. This will come back and haunt us.

Waht happens if Flavs gets sent off in the Gillingham Came on the Friday?! We play again on the Monday...... Is that time to bring in someone half decent on loan? Even if we did how much time would they have to come in train with the team!?

I think we are better off getting someone in now so they can train with the team get some confidence off of the rest of the team and be ready should the unthinkable happen and Stumpy gets injured or sent off.

Obviously bringing in a hlf decent keeper on loan is easier said then done. Not many keepers want to come in and warm the bench. Anyone who does isn't really the class of keep we want?! Which is I think where Tilly & Brush are at the moment...

EXACTLY!!

Any goalkeeper we bring in to warm the bench won't be worth the splinters we put in his backside. If Darryl gets injured or sent off, we'll then have to move quickly.

Can we be so sure that Tilly and Brush do not already have plans in place to do this?

Bringing in a keeper to warm the bench is nigh impossible.
Bringing in a keeper to play in a match - highly probable.

Goalkeeper getting sent off / injured and us conceding a goal as a result of a goalkeeping error - possible but statistically very, very unlikely.

Rare maybe, but a risk not worth taking at this stage. He could be injured/sent off very early in a game; he could be injured in training the day before a match; he could be ill on the morning of the match. If having just one keeper is such a smart idea why don't all the other clubs do that? Not looking for an international here, just someone who can do the basics.

No one's saying it's such a smart idea.

But it's certainly not the problem it's being made out to be (in my opinion of course).

Or at least it hasn't been so far.

I'm sure they have something covered for the Easter period. Maybe Bart will be fit by then?

It's not a problem; it's a potential problem.

Being uninsured is only a problem if you have an accident.

Insurance is only useful if it's actually cover that you'll be able to rely on. My argument is that we won't find any good keepers wanting to warm our bench.

What we're ALL agreed on though is that there is a risk involved (however large or small) and that we certainly don't want to start having accidents!

Like we did with Sodje when he came to us on loan on the day of the game. I'd say he's more than decent.
