Memory Lane Goalkeeper Red Cards

Newbie
Zach Jeacock became the 9th Southend goalkeeper to receive a red card, Unfortunately, unless we are winning at the time of the dismissal, it doesn't end well. Here is the Goalkeeper Hall of Shame:

18th Sep 1982 - John Keeley 71 mins (professional foul outside penalty area) v Doncaster (H). Score at time 3-1, final score Won 3-2. Keith Mercer took over in goal.

14th Mar 1992 - Paul Sansome 58 mins (professional foul in penalty area) v Middlesbrough (H). Score at time 0-0. Final score Lost 0-1 (penalty). Steve Tilson took over on goal.

23rd Mar 1993 - Paul Sansome 52 mins (handball outside penalty area) v Notts County (A). Score at time 0-1. Final score Lost 0-4. Steve Tilson took over on goal.

9th Oct 1993 - Paul Sansome 26 mins (professional foul in penalty area) v Grimsby (A). Score at time 0-1. Final score Lost 0-4. Simon Royce took over in goal.

06 Dec 1997 - Simon Royce 56 mins (foul in penalty area) v Fulham (A), FA Cup. Score at time 0-0. Final score Lost 0-1 (penalty). Tony Henriksen took over in goal and saved a last minute penalty.

15 Dec 2001 - Darryl Flahavan 81 mins (handball outside penalty area) v Rochdale (A). Score at time 1-0. Final score Won 1-0. Danny Gay took over in goal.

8th Oct 2004 - Darryl Flahavan 45 mins (handball outside penalty area) v Boston (H). Score at time 2-0. Final score Won 2-1. Tes Bramble took over in goal with no goalkeeper amongst 5 substitutes.

1st Sep 2018 - Mark Oxley 90+5 mins (violent conduct) v Charlton (H). Score at time 1-2. FInal score Lost 1-2. Ben Coker took over in goal for the remaining few minutes of stoppage time.

9th Nov 2024 - Zach Jeacock 27 mins (handball outside penalty area) v Yeovil (H). Score at time 0-0. Final score Lost 0-1. Collin Andeng-Ndi took over in goal.

Some interesting memories there. I vaguely remember Tilly being good in goal when he was called upon!

Also for the Henriksen penalty save, I’m pretty sure he did the same thing as Royce bringing down an attacker as last man to concede a penalty, however Henriksen received a yellow card rather than a red! It probably should have been our two goalkeepers sent off in the same game, a highly unusual scenario that would have been.

I could have sworn we had a loanee keeper sent off on his RH debut , seems I was mistaken , must have gone off injured …maybe I am just getting old

You could be remembering the match at home to Salford on 27th Feb 2021. First choice keeper Mark Oxley was out with a groin injury and Mark Molesley signed Alex Bass on loan from Portsmouth to play against Salford. But Bass was injured late in the first half and was replaced at half time by 19-year-old Harry Seaden. Bass didn't play for Blues again.

For the next game at Cheltenham, Molesley signed James Montgomery on loan from Gateshead. This meant we had played 4 different goalkeepers in 3 games!

So from Flahavan in 2004 to Jeacock we had 20 years with only Oxley sent off. Could have sworn it was more than that. On Saturday I was thinking maybe Arnold got red for us?

Arnold was injured loads of times so we saw quite a few sub keepers (including Demi at Notts County) during his stint but I don’t think he was ever red carded for us.

Thanks that’s most likely the one
