Glossing Wood.

DTS

The Business
Lads,

I need some Gloss Work related assitance.

I recently repainted the wood in one of my flats which is up for rent as we speak. I have painted the wood work using I must confess "Wilkos" high quality gloss.

Now the gloss itself has gone a little bit sort of patchy.

Does gloss need two coats or have I just used a crap gloss.

There is some serious rep on offer here for anyone that can end my gloss related problems.

Tks
Dave

Also, I used to work in a DIY department, and we had a cheaper brand and Dulux. The cheaper brand was made by Kalon, suppliers of Mangers, Johnstones, Leyland etc. Many of our customers swore it was better than the Dulx/ICI equivalent.

This one's a freebie, no extra rep required :p

Dave,

Next time you repaint, have a think about using Satinwood instead of gloss. Gloss is in itself a lot harder to apply; and needs a lot more maintenance than satinwood since it discolours a lot more quickly. I reckon you need to repaint gloss every 18 months, whilst satinwood you can leave for 3-4 years.

If you are installing new skirting or architave buy the pre primed MDF stuff rather than timber because it gives a completely uniform finish when painted.

I would also recommend satin paint as well.

Thanks to all. I will get myself some satin paint this weekend.

Cheers

I concur with that as someone extensively involved in redecorating my entire house following an extension.

If you're painting it over the gloss make sure you give it a light rub down first Dave so it's got something to key against.

Also agree with MtS - Satinwood is a much nicer finish.

Using fine sand paper. I would also advise to give a light rub down after each coat of Satinwood, as ther are always likely to be specks of dust etc. that will land on your newly painted woodwork. To avoid this you could always try to affix a layer of clingfilm around 2 inches from the top of your woodwork.

The only time I painted with gloss I made sure I sanded the area well first. That took about twice as long as the actual painting, but I only needed one coat and it looked pretty damn good.

One word of warning if you are going to sand it first, make sure you wear a mask and have the room well ventilated. I didn't and had white bits coming out of my eyes and nose for a few days. Not very pleasant.

Dulux SatinWood - I also opt for same brand primer and undercoat. In my experience, Dulux Decorater Centres offer free excellent advice and also have good deals on from time to time.

Had some bad experiences with other brands (peeling after 2 days).

Peeling is generally down to not rubbing down correctly.....As most have said on here Dave,Satinwood or Eggshell is a far superior finish to Gloss these days for longevity and cleaning purposes and you dont get that harsh glare you do with gloss.....Any finish of woodwork is down to the preparation from the start, between coats and using a decent brush.
