Glazer makes formal bid for manure

US sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer has launched a £790m formal takeover bid for Manchester United.

The American has secured the 28.7% stake owned by Irish racing tycoons JP MacManus and John Magnier, giving him almost 57% of the Premier$hite club.

Red Football Ltd, acting on behalf of Mr Glazer, said the Irishmen had sold their stakes for 300p a share.

The bid comes five days ahead of the 17 May deadline when Mr Glazer had to make known whether he planned to bid.

Mr Glazer is now 18% short of the 75% of shares he needs for the offer to go unconditional.

'Aggressive'

If he gets 75% plus one share, United could be delisted from the stock exchange and Mr Glazer could transfer his debt onto the club.

A further announcement containing more detailed terms of the offer will be made shortly

If he can get to 90% plus one share, he can make a compulsory purchase and scoop up the other 10% of the club's shares.

United's rallied 34.25 pence, or 12.9%, at 299.25p shortly after the announcement.

Two weeks ago the club board said it could not recommend Mr Glazer's takeover proposals to shareholders because his business plan appeared to be too "aggressive".

His first two offers were rejected by the board, on the grounds that his plans relied too heavily on borrowed money.

"A further announcement containing more detailed terms of the offer will be made shortly," Red Football said in a statement.

Just been browsing the shareholders united forum to gauge their views - all this "not for sale" crap really gets to me - sorry guys, as a PLC yes you bloody well are!

It's John McCririck.

Perhaps he will take one look at his new club's fan-base, and move it, franchise American stylee to Guildford.

Whether or not the takeover is completed is irrelevant. Glazer now owns 56% of MUFC PLC so can do pretty much as he likes. Already there's been talks of merchandise price hikes and season tickets doubling in cost to recoup his outlay. After all, that is one mighty expensive prawn sandwich.

When you embrace the City, you eventually realise that there is good and bad in market forces. Man Ure are now discovering the latter and it couldn't happen to a better set of "fans".

Oh well, Manure have troad on anyone benefith them for years, they are going for all this sympathy crap but they wanted to become a 'brand', they have to pay the price.

Good point. I never heard anyone complaining when they became a global superclub with significant revenues accruing from people half way across the world.

I honestly have no sympathy whatsoever.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I'd have had more sympathy if the Moan U fans had paid the slightest attention to the demise of clubs like Wimbledon, York, Brighton, Wrexham etc.

I went to a fans united day in York and one of the demands was for a "fit and proper" test for ownership of clubs. I didn't see a single ManUre fan there.

What happened at clubs like York and Wrexham is a far greater tragedy than Moan U being taken over by someone who MAY raise ticket prices.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha

This will really set the cat among the pidgeons. I can't wait to see what happens when Glazer tries to strike out for an exclusive TV deal for United. Once that happens the unity over TV money between the Premier$hite clubs will be shattered .
When is the next Sky contract up for negotiation?
Anyone actually believe that the Utd fans will boycott the matches?

They might well do, but Glazer knows that tickets at Old Trafford are like gold dust. There'll always be fans without tickets who would be willing to get to Old Trafford, no matter who's in charge.

Well the reporter for Sky Sports News at Old Trafford has just made a good point that the fans protests and boycotts mean bugger all to Glazer, saying "for every fan who boycott's a match, there'll be another 10 who come along".

Also, apparently Glazer now owns 70% of old Trafford, so it’s now a case of when, not if, he transfers his debts to the club. Seems they are finally paying the price for floating all those years ago....

The only negative consequence of this is that for teams such as Wrexham, Cambridge and Notts County, who are all going to struggle massively within the next few weeks, will have their plight massively overshadowed because some people have to pay extra to watch their team come third in the league. They will now receive little to no publicity despite the fact that their entire future could be decided within a week (for cambridge at least, not sure about the others)

Imagine the coverage if Glazer does actually bring the club to within a week of death...

You should take a look at the BBC's have your say page on the Glazer takeover, it's hilarious..!

Apparently United fans are waging a battle for the soul of English football on behalf of all football fans. I bet York, Cambridge, Wrexham etc are eternally grateful for that. Also did you all know that Utd have a history and tradition which means that it shouldn't be allowed to happen to them? Of course it's ok for other clubs to get screwed over cos they don't have histories & traditions etc.
Apparently Ole & Eric are going to form a new club that will rise Phoenix like from the ashes to take the place of the new, horrible, corporate MUFC. I hope they enjoy life at the sh*tty end of the stick in the Unibond Northern Premier. It should be very enlightening for them.

There's also a very interesting point made on Wrexham's message board (red passion) by Henry J:

The government gets involved when Man United are being bought by a yank, who will not necessarily ruin the club.

[b said:
[b said:
]Constitutional affairs minister Harriet Harman said the government had urged Mr Glazer to have talks with fans, the Football Association and the club in order to ensure there was "constructive involvement" She told BBC One's Question Time: "Manchester United is very important to English football and the government is keeping a very close eye on the situation. "The fans are very worried." .

But back in November, when we were in a far worse way than Man. United, we have this.

[b said:
Quote[/b] ]Prime Minister Tony Blair said he wished the club "well" as they battle their problems. The club's current plight was raised by the town's MP, Ian Lucas, at Prime Minister's Question Time on Wednesday. Tony Blair told the Commons he wished Wrexham well but he could not intervene personally in the debate over the club's ownership. But he added: "Obviously, I wish them well".

Obviously Man. United, unlike humble Wrexham, is

Hmmm, food for thought.

I feel really sorry for Cambridge! I want to go to a few games next season at the Abbey, the visit of Grays there will be good!

Their a really good friendly club who dont deserve going out of business! I've always enjoyed the away trips there etc.

I find it funny all this talk of Man.U being taken over, it's quality!!!!

Man.U fans dont realise how lucky they are compared to Cambridge fans!!!!

Glazer is a hero!!!!!
