Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer has died in hospital following a third stroke.

After a second stroke in May, Glazer's condition was not thought to be life threatening and he had been released from hospital but he suffered a third stroke last night and was pronounced dead at Florida's Cleveland Clinic at 11.04am BST.

The American, 77, had been in hospital for most of the previous three months after suffering a first stroke on 16 April. He had had difficulty with speech and movement on his right side.

"He was a great man, a wonderful father and we will miss him dearly," said Joel Glazer, one of his sons.

"Our family appreciates all the support and warm condolences that we have received."

A spokesman for the family insisted that the running of Manchester United was unaffected.

Glazer bought the club for £790m last summer.
