At the moment our expected opening day line-up would be:

Oxley 27
Demetriou 29
Coker 27
Ferdinand 32
Thompson 24
Wordsworth 28
Leonard 25
Timlin 32
McLaughlin 27
Cox 30
Fortune 36

First off the bench: White 31, McGlashan 28, Robinson 28
In prison: Ranger 26

The departure of Atkinson (29 in October) gives us an opportunity to inject some youth into the squad and find a young player who we can develop and in time sell on for a healthy profit to fund the wages of the next lot of expensive, experienced players like Cox and Ferdinand. Whilst it's always hard to part with players such as Lenny, Bentley, Bailey, Barnard, Eastwood etc selling such players is an important source of income, particularly when we've been deprived of cup runs for the last few years.

There goes our youngest player! Leonard next ? Will their replacements be aged 30+? Brown doesn't do untried or up and coming youngsters any more !

Someone like Bridge.............oh...........

Apart from Lenny , Bentley , Payne , Thompson ....

Lenny, Bentley and Payne were all here before Brown - and when Lenny goes there will be no one. The only player under 25 recruited in the last two years was O'Neill -and he's gone too.

Brown was the one who had the willingness to play them though. Especially Bentley, Sturrock never seemed completely convinced by him.

Bentley was still breaking through at the time. He had played a number of games in Sturrocks last season.

Sure he would have ended up being our No.1 the season after either way.

Not sure that stat is right as there have been a few others who have come and gone - eg Sokolik - but the pattern is clear.

I am sure someone with more time on their hands than me can look through all our signings but I suspect there is a good mixture of over and under 25's signed by Brown. Players like Coker for example would have been under 25 when he signed.

The team has got older over the last couple of years but there has not been a massive turnover of players either so that is to some extent natural.

Is there a pattern? Maybe but I think it is more about who is available and who will strengthen the squad. The only players we signed last year who were over 30 were Fortune and Ferdinand and there is no doubt that alongside Cox they have been excellent signings.

Having said that I would like to see some younger signings this year, but not just for the sake of it.
