tonights vote on the increase in holding terrorist suspects is very interesting

the goverment is proposing that if they pass the new law, and someone is held for over a month with no charge, they will pay that person £3,000 a day, in compensation so do the sums. Would you grow a bushy beard, wear a rucksack and hang around stations for £90,000, okay so you do a month inside, not the end of the world is it, 3 square meals, a day, as many drugs as you can swallow, and sky tv

Its worrying. Surely if there is enough suspicion to hold them in the first place that should be good enough without having to worry about giving them money.

I wonder if it would work the other way - If they were found guilty the Country could take their possessions up to the same value, which would be a contribution towards the money the tax payer has shelled out for their wrong doing.

This is a complete joke. If someone is held for that long then there has to be a very good reason for it, so why should you be entitled to compensation? And where the heck do they get a figure like that from? You'll have every feckless scrounger in the land offering themselves up for it!

you would hope so wouldn't you... the Jean Charles de Menezes tragedy showed that our police aren't quite that competent to only lock away guilty people! I'm worried that our country is very quickly going to go down the route of "guilty until proven innocent", and this compensation payment thing seems to be a way of trying to soften the blow and deflect the attention from the 42-day issues

Am I being very naive again? I just would expect that to hold someone for almost a whole month then there should be a pretty good stack of evidence already piling up.

Oh my god, what about Mr Claus at christmas, big bushy beard hanging around roof tops in the middle of the night!

NICK HIM :)

I'd have thought impersonating a terrorist outside a tube station is like playing Russian Roulette. OK, the prospect of being paid £90,000 to watch Sky Sports is fairly tempting, but what if you are mistaken for a Brazilian electrician?
