Focused - Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Ben Peters)

By Chris Phillips.Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher says he is thinking about nothing but the game with Gateshead.

The Shrimpers will secure a top seven spot if they avoid defeat in the north-east on Monday

But Maher is purely focused on the 90 minutes on the pitch.

“We’ve got to go and perform,” said the Blues boss.

“There can be so much talk and so much noise but the match is my only concern.

“We know what we’ve got to do and it’s pretty rare you have two teams playing like this not waiting on other results.
''But my full focus is on the game and what we’ve got to do.

“We can’t be thinking about anything else.”

Gateshead go into the game also looking to make the play-offs.

Carl Magnay’s side are just one point and one place behind Blues ahead of the final league game of the season.

And Maher knows the Shrimpers are in for a stern test.

“They’re a very good football team,” said Maher.

“Credit goes to them and everyone involved at Gateshead because they’ve had quite a few changes of managers but they have a style of play they stick by.

“It’s really good football to watch so I have to give them credit.

“They’ve had a lot of changes and they’re still up towards the top of the table competing so we’re under no illusions how tough this game will be.”

But Blues have prepared well for the clash.

“It’s been a good week,” said Maher.

“Our lead in to games is always the same and we’ve had a couple of really hot days so it was important to get training right.

“There’s been the right mix of intensity and detail and we’ve got to manage getting the travel up right too.

“But it’s just another normal week as much as it can be.”

I've been dipping in and out of the Gatesshead Forum, and there has a bit of concern that we will get seats in their main stand and they are not impressed. Thankfully one of their number posted this:

I have been around Sarfend supporters many times over the years and find them to be one of the best set of supporters anywhere in the country. Good supporters good club really good people.

Take a bow travelling Shrimpers.

Unfortunately I cant go so will be telly watching and looking for the TAZ in the crowd. My daughter has been brought up proper as a shrimper and now lives in Newcastle. She has her ticket and will for sure be joining the fantastic hordes in the open away fans end.

She will be on her own but I know will be made right at home with our great supporters
