Gary Lineker

Where does it state he is leaving completetly?
He won't just retire and keep quiet.
He will chunder on in some useless way being paid a small fortune by his muckers at the beeb for doing not a lot.
He is okay, just about, on M of D, but massively over paid and offers zero on incisive commentary.

GL is a big earner current contract around £1.3 mill so as the BBC are strapped for cash he wasnt offered a new one.He has been main one for MOTD but who takes over will be a interesting one.Hopefully someone equally knowledgeable about the game

Apparently he will be stepping down from MoTD at the end of the season but will leave the BBC completely after the 2026 World Cup.
I'm sure he won't be strapped for cash though as he has between 25%-50% interest in Goalhanger Podcasts which is the biggest podcast streamer outside the US with about 400 million downloads. Also has a similar interest in Goalhanger Films...

I enjoyed GL as a player and thought he was a good presenter but he is over paid in my view and he hasn’t helped himself recently with all his politically views and comments
I would like to see Mark Chapman take the helm but we all know at the BBC they are going to tick the boxes to be seen unbiased

My guess is that MoTD will follow a new format when Lineker leaves. Just about every pro club has highlights released after a game, albeit immediately after, or as a close follower, and that devalues MoTD coverage to a large degree. I have no idea how the program will change, but change it will.

I haven't watched an episode of MoTD for many years, mainly because Prem football mostly bores me to tears these days. Much easier to watch the highlights for a particular game on the Sky Sports Prem YouTube channel which is probably why MoTD is getting less and less relevant every year.

I'd assume Lineker will still be hanging around for that all expenses paid trip to North America for the World Cup though. Fair play to him though, had a very decent (and lucrative) career in broadcasting.

I guess absence makes the heart grow fonder but I really miss MoTD - not a big fan of PL football but the quick highlights and goals package worked for me.

Fuham don't;. I pay a fiver a month to see offical highlights of their Prem.games and only saw the long (about 10mins) Palace highlights this am. Short highlights (about 2mins /same as MOTD's were available day after the game.

Don't like his politics but there's no denying he's very good at the job and leaves huge boots to fill. He's pretty much the only presenter of MOTD I've known and I still watch the programme regularly (when the kids let me). He's very good at fronting the England coverage as well. Will be sad when he leaves.

Mark Chapman is the obvious choice for me, hugely experienced and earned his stripes at the BBC, although I wonder if he's more suited to the more relaxed format of MOTD2. Manish Bhasin, Colin Murray and Gabby Logan would also be safe choices. I really hope they don't go for a DEI hire like Alex Scott (though I doubt it if you look at how Football Focus' ratings have declined under her) or Micah Richards. I always thought Dan Walker would succeed Lineker but he seems to have moved away from sport now and is apparently on a fat contract with Channel 5.
