Gareth Risbridger

Matt the Shrimp

aka Harry Potter
Just saw this story in the news today:

'Don't wear bladed boots' pleads mum

I had no idea about this. Poor Gareth.

Get well soon fella. Wasn't the best player to ever grace Roots Hall but I don't wish that sort of thing on anybody.

never really played much though did he

once said hello to me at grays after a pre season friendly

the 'Blades are dangerous' debate starts again. I remember John Gowens in his programme notes asking for them to be banned as well. Personally never worn them so can't really comment

I've worn them and put a nasty hole in someones knee with them once - by accident as it goes.

Still don't go in for the Blades are dangerous camp though. You can do just as much damage with studs if you ask me.

Don't like to hear about injuries like that. Hope he gets better soon

I think the blades which seem to be causing the most problems are the one's with the steel tips. I wear the Adidas F50's (to be specific the same one's as the Goat!) but these have plastic blades, I tend to find these better for hard ground but when the pitches get wetter/heavier I go back to normal studded Adidas World Cup. Cannot say (fingers crossed) I have seen any injuries from blades but they seem to be very popular in my Saturday & Sunday leagues.

Nope, I don't think they should be.

I have a pair of the metal blades and a pair of the plastic blades and so far (Fingers crossed) I haven't been involved in a incident like the ones being mentioned. Thing is, there are at maximum 10 incidents of horrific injuries that have occured from metal blades but when you consider the amount of football played up and down the country on saturdays and sundays and the amount of people wearing metal blades its not a bad percentage.

Where did you get that figure from?
It was a rough guess, but I've only heard of 3 incidents anyways.

Sorry to hear about Bressie.

My stance on blades is probably tainted by my age but I am yet to be convinced about the advantages of blades over 'traditional' boots.

I've worn mouldeds for about 11 years now (not your old 13 rubber stud variety) and they are perfect all season round on the heaviest or driest of pitches. Originally advised to do so by physio after dislocating kneecap and tearing cruciate but I've never looked back.

I'm convinced, in the exact same way that millions were taken in by Predators, that it is all marketing b******s with very little (if any) proven factual benefit to the player wearing the boots. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to work out that blades aren't the best thing in the world to come into contact with.

I'm also still trying to work out what boots Van Poofie wore last night. Anyone know ?

That's a worrying story. I play Sunday league and last week was studded in the stomach (accidentally, I should add) when going for a 50-50 ball. I escaped with a couple of marks and some colourful bruising but I dare say bladed boots could potentially have caused greater damage.

Oh well if you've only heard of three incidents, there must be about 10 worldwide eh? Christ on a bike, it's like Vicky Pollard on Shrimperzone.
