From first to worst - rate the James Bonds

hexagon_sun

Manager
Being a child of the 70s, I grew up knowing James Bond as the suave, safari-suited Roger Moore portrayal and that's still how I prefer the character to be. Here's how I rate all 5;

1. Roger Moore
2. Sean Connery
3. Tim Dalton
4. George Lazenby
5. Pierce Brosnan

Despite Lazenby being a little wooden, I love his one attempt at Bond. I think Dalton's 2 movies aren't bad at all but I've never liked Brosnan and I'm really not a fan of his 21st century version of Mr Bond. Despite not even completing one film yet, Daniel Craig seems to be getting even more stick than George Lazenby - anyone think he's going to be any good?

As for the films, my favourite Bond movie changes with my mood but if I'd chucked a sicky today to stay at home and do a 9 hour Bond marathon instead, this is how the DVDs would be piled up;

1. The Man With the Golden Gun
2. Dr No
3. Live & Let Die
4. From Russia With Love
5. OHMSS

Let the arguments commence...

Best : Goldfinger

Worst : Octopussy

I did like Goldeneye on the Nintendo as well.

Here's mine:

1. Sean Connery
2. Pierce Brosnan
3. George Lazenby
4. Tim Dalton
5. Tilly
6. Brush
7. Flahavan
8. Any other present Shrimpers player
9. Any other former Shrimpers player
10. Any Shrimpers fan
11. Wiggy

300. Roger Moore

Opinions, opinions, eh.
Even as a lifelong fan of the Bond empire, I've always HATED Roger Moore. I'd go as far as saying, I'd choose many an Orient fan as Bond before Rog.

Roger Moore is the best
Dalton is the second
worst is Niven

Surely nothing beats Moonraker

And that bit where they had to shoot the capsules at the end

Shocking

I refer you to two scenes in Octopussy.

1. Bond swings on a jungle creeper and makes the Tarzan aaaahaahaaa sound.

2. Snake crawls over Bond as he lies in the undergrowth. Bond tells snake to 'hiss off' at which point the film is reversed and the snake slithers off backwards.

These are the two worst points of a truly awful film which surely marks the nadir of the 007 franchise.

On the other hand, when it comes to villians on the I like the two hitmen - Mr Wint and Mr Kidd from Diamonds are forever.

Mad Cyril is 100% right there... awful, awful, awful.  Never Say Never Again is pretty ropey too, as is View To A Kill - both were "one film too many" for the Bonds in question.

Then again, I found the last Bond an intensely depressing experience... you had all the right ingredients - a decent Bond (Brosnan), a decent director (Lee Tamahori... Once Were Warriors is a top film), a nice looking English bird (Rosamund Pike), a celeb cameo (Madge) - but the end product was unspeakably bad.

I do believe that the Slo-Mo at the end of Die Another Day is the "Hiss Off" de nos jours...

Anyhow, my top 6 Bonds:

1. Sean Connery
2. Roger Moore
3. Timothy Dalton
4. Pierce Brosnan
5. David Niven
6. George Lazenby (for the avoidance of doubt, you cannot have a fuggin' Ocker playing Bond).

Daniel Craig...?  Dunno.  He seems a right old mardy barsteward, but I'm prepared to give him a crack.  Personally, I'd like to see Rhys Ifans given a go - it'd be a belter.

Oh, and here's young Ros Pike...

Interesting suggestion! My tip for the future is James McAvoy - too young for Bond right now, would be perfect in 5-6 years time and it would surely please the Connery fans (and be good marketing) to have a Jock in the role again.

A View To a Kill was the best Bond film of an era with the best villian and storyline to boot.

Matt the Shrimp, You sir are an idiot!! **swings large trout in general direction to issue a resounding slap**

OK, Christopher Walken is excellent and Grace Jones is... well, Grace Jones. It was just that Roger Moore looks so old & orange, that's all...

AVTOAK was excellent- IMO, it had an Eastenders extra, Walken hamming it up, the first time a woman dominated James in bed, great cinematography, good soundtrack and a great finale.

SB, I'm on your side.

I think Paul Bethany (or is it Bettany?) would have been a good choice. Check out his stare in Gangster Number 1 if you don't think he's man enough! Maybe one for the future....

So true, especially on four (or was the maximum three) player with a split screen, always looking nervusly around waiting... Classic!
