Question Free Transfers

BoyWonder2

2024, the year of the Shrimpers ⭐🦐
Now we all know the transfer window has firmed shut, and the loan window is re-opening next week, but what about free transfers?

The likes of Keith Gillespie, Ian Harte, Malcolm Christie have all been released by their Clubs over the last 3/4 days and certainly Ian Harte would be a very good signing but are we allowed to sign free transfers still?

Can someone confirm this one way or the other please.

Yes in therory we could sign them but given the 3 you mention have been based in the north for the majority of their careers its safe to say we wont be signing any of those.

Moses Ashikodi of Watford has had his contract cancelled today, so I'd like us to have a sniff around him - was quite highly rated and with Deano there, I'd hope he'd send him our way.

I'm not saying we would sign those but I used those as an example of the players out there.

Also, if we was in talks with a Club about a player out of favour, for example Ed Upson at Ipswich. Could we talk the Club into releasing the player and then him joining us on a free or does it have to be people that was released before a certain time?

just keep the knives away from him

If a player is a free agent, then he is free to negotiate with any club, and to answer your question he will be able to sign outside the transfer window.

Not strictly true. Only if he became a free agent while a transfer window was open would he be able to be signed by a new club outside of the window.

I think you are wrong as Diego Tristan was released during the autumn and he subsequently signed for Wet Spam.

That's interesting as I was under the impression the rule below (taken from BBC's site from 01/09/2008) was still in-force.

"Players who are out of contract and do not have a club, can be signed outside of the transfer window if they are unattached free agents when the window closes."

Who is this Tristan bloke, anyway?

Just done another quick search, BBC reports Tristan had been released by Livorno end of the previous season, not halfway through current season.

The player must have been released during or before the previous transfer window IIRC...

Yep, that's basically it. If they are a free agent when the window shuts then they are free to sign for anyone whenever they can. If they are released after the window closes then they can't be registered until the next transfer window.
