Frannys agent shocked by martins conduct

Martin's decision came as a surprise to Francis' agent Tommy Cunningham, who insisted the defender wanted to stay with the Shrimpers.

Indeed. It seems that RM is playing hard-ball. It's a risky game, but I agree with not being held to ransom...however, we don't know what SF was asking for.

And don't forget that the agent only does what they player asks him to do. If the player says, "actually that's a good deal and I am going to sign it", then that is what will happen. If the player says, "i'm not happy", then the agent will renegotiate and also look elsewhere...it's not just the agent...

Typical Echo, I am afraid, putting a very negative spin on the story. Only menitioning the critical comments on the original story, for instance, and cleary went to print before Ron's statement. I don't think Chris will have improved his relationship with the club with that one.

I actually disagree, in a balanced view they should try and get quotes from the players and their agents.

But it wasn't balanced - of course they should get quotes from players and their agents but it was ALL negative - despite the fact that quite a few of the people who commented on the original article backed Ron, they don't get a mention at all. That was my point.

a balanced view is that for the first 18 months he was poor, the next 6 months he did ok. Shant be sorry if he stays or moves on. Wouldnt have thought that there will be a que of clubs fighting for his signature.

Who? Clarke or Francis? or any number of the others on the list?

"Southend spoke to us and we went back with an counter-deal which is how it works in this industry.

"Normally you hold more talks again and meet somewhere in the middle. I was waiting for the club to come back to me.

"I haven't heard back from them since the middle of last week and Simon doesn't want to leave.

"This has come as a shock to me and obviously we'll be contacting the club to try and hold more talks."

How it works in this industry is probabley a key line and possibley RM hasn't got a clue how to handle experienced agents - I personally thought he buckled under pressure from Wolves overt the Eastwood deal

I'm quite encouraged by this to be honest. I suspect that the players weren't taking part in this at all until the agent brought them the most they think they can get out of the club.

I don't care how Francis's agent thinks this normally goes, Ron Martin has the right to do as he pleases. He's clearly banking on the players not wanting to leave, which the agent clearly shows, and for them to push their agents into closing a sensible deal.

It's obviously a gamble as he's completely at the mercy of the players' intentions to stay. I think it's telling that he's picked these three though.

I think they'll all probably sign contract extensions, in which case it was a great move. If they don't then obviously, with hindsight, it won't seem too clever. It's about time someone put their foot down over the absolute nonsense that goes on. If they know they won't get away with it they won't try it.

aha methinks Neil F might have this about right ....

This is what I was saying yesterday but no-one seemed to be agreeing with me! I said that RM might be calling their bluff, knowing that the players probably don't want to leave and therefore influencing them and the agents to come back with more realistic demands.

Why does he say we have to meet somewhere in the middle? Why can't the agent produce reasonable demands in the first place so there doesn't have to be a middle? Bloody agents.

Surely this is just a sad fact of business and compromises have to be reached at some point, otherwise nobody would ever seal a deal. Saying that, the agent was probably completely unreasonable in setting the initial demand much higher than we could afford.

That's what I was sort of getting at, that the original demands were probably stupid and to meet in the middle would still mean a hefty wage.

Sounds positive.

Probably Franno said he wanted to sign the contract but his agent said "hold on" we can get you more here, but it backfired probably because of the demands of Bailey's agent.

This is giving me hope it's not all lost!
