FourFourTwo

Not sure if someone has already mentioned this so my apologies if it has but i bought the new issue of fourfourtwo magazine today and its got the new season preview. They have put us to finish 4th next season and i wanted to know what everyone thought of it.

personally i think if we want to finish in the top 7 we need to make more signings, our squad is so small for a team challenging for promotion...

They also said Lee Barnard was the one to watch...

Lee Barnard is the one to watch if he remains injury free which i doubt. As regards being 4th nice thought but it will not happen unless we sign several new players

I always enjoy the new season preview in this magazine, but never take much notice of the predictions, as apart from the top four in the Premiership, they never usually are that spot on.

Top 7 would be great, and agree that Barny may be the one to watch

Seeing as 'experts' predictions are usually wide of the mark I would prefer they said we could finish bottom half. When they predict us to struggle we often do well. 4th? I'd be happy with that but very much doubt it this season.

Look at the book makers as well - we are 5th/6th favorites.

There is an awful lot of negativity on this forum. We have a small squad, yes, but we bar Gower and Flavs, we have the players that brought us the sucess last season...and a few more. Without a doubt, numbers is an issue, but the fact remains we still have a core of extreemly good players at this level:

in particular: Barrett, Barnard, Walker, Baily, Macca, Moussa, Clarke and not forgetting Furlong, who in my eyes still looks class...oh and Scannell.

Strikers was our let down last year - we started with Harrold, Hooper, Paynter, Foran, Bradbury....all usless

...we now have Furlong, Barnard and Walker - am I not right in saying these three are very good players?!

We need some more players, but not super stars, just some 'fillers' who will provide back up and maybe one, just one - lets be realistic, creative 'special' player.

We are cirtainly not in trouble. Many clubs in our league would love to have the calibre of player as those mentioned in para 2.

FourFourTwo know f**k all about the lower leagues. They had us going down the season we won the league, for instance.

As for the bookies... that's a bit more persuasive; although it might also mean that there are a fair few mug punters in South East Essex, and the bookies are merely covering their liability...

:thump:

Yes, we had rubbish strikers at the beginning of the season but we still scored goals for fun pre season.

It is the lack of goals that concerns me here.

And we seem to have adopted this diamond formation that has only ever worked for Lawrie McMenemy at Southampton and everyone who has tried it since has failed.

It is a system that looks good, sounds good, but just doesn't work.

Not for the first time,Doncaster are used as the reason for the success of the diamond if that was,in fact, the system they used.
I recall Doncaster went up through the play offs, not automatically, and were probably the only promoted team to use this system.
Why then is it considered a success by certain posters on here.

Talk about holding grudges - still the the best Football magazine in the country though

Probably - and I do quite like them. And it's not especially grudge holding, as such - I just think that, other than "The League Paper", there isn't really any periodical in the UK that writes well about league clubs.

FourFourTwo has good writers and interesting stories, but generally their coverage below the Premiership is pretty patchy.

And they haven't featured enough of Slipperduke's writing, which is clearly hugely short-sighted of them.
