Former West Brom and Man U midfielder Michael Appleton successfully sued a surgeon who admitted doing "unnecessary surgery" on a knee injury. Appleton was injured in training in 2001, the year before WBA won promotion and never fully recovered. It was claimed he could have got more 500,000 a year as a Premiership player.
On his side was Alex Ferguson, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs who testified that he had great potential as a footballer. The level of damages was based on their's and "expert witnesses" testimonies.
