So they bring in wage caps as they want squads to be smaller. So they're going back to making you name bigger match day squads? Bizarre.

I don't think it's compulsory. Up to 7, if you want to name just 5 that'll be fine. Certainly limiting it to 5 does reduce the capability to integrate youngsters into the matchday squads.

Ridiculous decision that just encourages sides to carry too big a squad.

This just increases clubs travelling costs: another two heads to feed, another hotel room to book.

And for what? To deprive youth team players of youth team football on Saturday so they can sit on a bench; to remove the need for players to develop the versatility to play and understand multiple positions.

Absurd.

If its optional then it has no bearing on anything unless teams choose to do so.

With regards to the comments above saying the cap making teams smaller thats not the case, its meant to keep salaries down in general. Teams can still have big squads if they wish, they will just have to pay each player less.

Agree with this, i'd go as far as saying i think it should be compulsory that 2 are 18 and under

What about youth games that are played on Sat mornings? The 2 under 18 players would not be able to play for the youth team. So what is better for them sitting on a bench for 90 mins or playing for 90 mins.

Now there is a case that some of these under 18's deserve a place on the bench for good performances in the youth team, but to force clubs to weaken the youth team just to have 2 on the first team bench would not work, would it?

I can't see a problem with this for us as this season we have had plenty of players in first team squad who are too old for youths and not out on loan.
