League agrees improved TV deals

The Football League has extended its broadcasting agreement with Sky and ITV for three years in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £110m.

The new deal represents an increase in revenue for the 72 Football League clubs of more than 40% on the previous deal of £25m a season over four years.

Sky Sports will now broadcast about 100 games a season from the Football League's competitions.

ITV will continue to show highlights of The Championship on Sunday morning.

It will also continue with regional highlights programmes.

" am delighted ITV have agreed to extend our partnership", said Football League chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney.

"We are delivering on the promise we made to increase our clubs' commercial revenues.

"The new agreement with Sky Sports is recognition of the outstanding entertainment our clubs provide their viewers week in, week out, throughout the season.

"I am delighted ITV have agreed to extend our partnership as this ensures supporters have the opportunity to see their clubs on free-to-air television."

The agreement comes just three years after the collapse of ITV Digital, which left the Football League £178.5m out of pocket.

ITV Digital went into administration in April 2002, just one year into a three-year contract to screen Football League games.

Very upset OS that you failed to mention this was posted in the wrong forum and should be in all leagues chit-chat.

After all that is your forte!

This is a completely wild guess as I have no idea how this is actually calculated.

Say £105million to make things easier.

£50million - Championship
£35million - League One
£20million - League Two

League One
£35million  /  46 Clubs  =  Approx £760,000 over 3 years?

Even so 40% increase in revenue and also in a league above is certainly going to be very good again for the finances.  Another good cup run and keep to the wage structure then we can gradually continue to turn the clubs finances around.

£35m / 24 clubs, presumably...

£1.46m over 3 years, or £485K a season... better than a kick in the teeth, if you ask me!

I think (just from a vague rumour I heard last year) that the split is something more like 80% Championship, 10% L1, 10% L2.

So the cash, if dished out the same, would be approx:

C    88M = 1,466,667 per club per year
L1   11M =   152,777 per club per year
L2   11M =   152,777 per club per year

Promising stuff. More money in the bank for Southend United then.

I think the pay-outs are skewed far more in favour of the Championship teams.

Also, the basic pay-outs are lower again in order to hold back money for those teams that are chosen for live games.

Bottom line is that if you're a League 1 team which doesn't have any live games (likely for us next season), you're looking at less than £100k pa.

And this is an extension to the current deal, to run to 2009, so NO INCREASE for the season coming.

Working for an accountants and looking at numbers all day has obviously played havoc on my mind.  Either that or there were far too many lemonades last night.  May just have to re-check everything I've done this morning now.....

After having lunch and actually waking up a bit I'm only going to explain that I must have been thinking 46 games a season!  One may call that a complete muppet!
