Fledgling Managers we Could'a Had

So, we've got the thread about young players we turned away... so which fledgling manager might have taken these stars under his wing had he not been rejected in similar fashion to the players?

This might be a tough one and subject to past rumours more than anything else, but I'd offer Bobby Robson.

Not a rumour. He was offered the player-manager's job by the then Director and great cricketer Trevor Bailey after being interviewed at Brentwood, but Bobby wasn't impressed that the salary was less than when he was at Fulham.

Don't let anyone ever say we offer decent wages ---- things haven't changed in the last 40 years.

Ian Atkins was set to take the job in early 2004 but turned it down and we got lumbered with Steve Tilson!!!!!!

Don Howe was wined and dined by the club back in 1987 when Webb had walked out the 1st time but turned us down.

Thankfully Collymore didn't get the job in 2003 what a disaster that would have been, 3 months later the dogging scandal broke. That could have led to some very interesting chants from opposition fans.

Claim to fame.I delivered the Xmas post to "Barnacle" Bailey's house in Chalkwell when I was a student back in the early seventies.Nice bloke but he didn't give me a Christmas box though.

Hopefully he gave it to the postman who delivered his letters for the other 95% of the year!
