Fitness trainer / sports scientist

Rayleigh boy

Director⭐
I heard Darren Ferguson on Talksport and he was taking two people to PeterBoro with him - a first team coach and a fitness trainer/sports scientist.

Have Tilly and Brush got one of these (the fitness trainer/sports scientist) - they are not as expensive as a player and can get an extra per cent or two out of the squad and not evryone thinks they acheive much but look what happened to Joe Cole once he got to Chelsea -

I doubt it.
I've been saying this for a couple of years we need to get somebody techincal in to work on the fitness of the team.

Look at the rugby training session the boys had last week, OK fair enough it was due to the weather and gave everyone a run about and "got the heart-rates pumping" according to Tilly, but it's not exactly fine-tuned athletes is it?

They should all be on diet plans and doing "bleep running tests" or "Conconi intervals" at least one a month!

Totally agree fitness is a massive issue! We need someone in to inforce this to build up the lads Diets and fitness so they can improve within thereselves!

I remember bleep tests; our sadistic PTI took great pleasure in putting us through that exertion regularly for a couple of years until he got a rifle butt round the canister one evening from some chap who apparently had an issue with them / him. We hardly did them after that ...

Charlton sacked Dowie because of some of his training regimes...

Apparently before a night game he took the squad out for a run in a local woods and ended up getting completely lost. What was meant to be an hour jog turned out to be a 3 hour trek that saw the whole squad avoiding traffic on a busy motorway as they crossed it to get to Taxi's the club had ordered. By the time they got back, the whole squad was knackered and they had a game that night...

He also had mass sessions of Cricket instead of training... Players said it brought the squad together a bit and they had a laugh, but it didn't help them at all in terms of football.

Fitness is obviously a massive issue... Cole couldn't last 15 minutes running around so should've been brought in. We thought Kightly wouldn't make the pace as he was too lightweight, Grays found out he never ate breakfast and stuck him on a diet, and look where he is now... We also look like we're getting bossed off the ball in a lot of games this season, especially in the centre of the park until Macca came in.

He got Palace promoted with those training techniques.... He didn't get sacked because of them, he got sacked because Charlton were rubbish.

the thing is its an expert job - not something the manager can or should do -
a completely seperate area of responsibility -

my worry is that cos Tilly and Brush got no experience of this when they were playing they may be behind the times with their outlook - in this they would be joined by a couple of premiership managers and a lot of ex- premiership managers - it a ridiculous element of football that players who are costing the club thousands a week in wages are not fully physically/athletically prepared -

and for older players some specialist input can extend their careers -

No wonder Dowie got the push - when the Chelsea players turn up for training every minute of the session (90 mins) is pre-planned and every
player is on their own programme etc. - sounds like a quality shambles at Charlton.

if i knew anything about it i would of course volunteer my number but as it is i am still waiting for a decent vacancy at Barecelona.

Not sure you can call Tilly a managerial dinosaur.

He played under a number of managerial legends like Colin "derranged ferret" Murphy, Barry "Judas" Fry, Peter "have you seen my Steptoe impression?" Taylor and Ronnie "mine's a Guiness" Whelan.

Tilly has also been on a lot of courses.

Tilly is an up an dcoming manager recently taken (taking?) his pro coaching license.

As such he will be exposed to all the new fads and techniques and will choose the ones he thinks are of benefit.

How anyone can even comment on what we need regarding fitness and dietary advice without knowing what we already do I dont know.

haven't got a clue about what we currently do - which is why i was asking ?

Perhaps Bradbury is backed by a space age training regime - I dunno - but nobody on here most of whom must be a lot closer to the club than me have stopped my speculation with any information. Perhaps they have a deal with a cutting edge sports dept.(like Loughborough Uni) or have access to the necessary expertise through other channels (the FA ?) i don't know.
Maybe theres a specialist around who isn't ever mentioned.

apologies for going on about but its a bit of a (yawn) hobby horse cos it
is shocking to see how a change of regime changes some players - favourite
example Joe Cole who was at a top club with pro set up etc etc but was clearly miles off his potential -

just before McCarthey was thrown out of Sunderland he was clearly embarrased when he was asked about the impact of modern techniques as he was then still of the "sort it out over a few beers mentality" that drove Roy Keane out of the Ireland team - Rednapp at Pompey is a supposed dinosauer -

pretty sure I haven't been commenting - just inquiring -
