Thought that I would compare our first 10 game stats from our seven seasons in the second tier. There were a few things that helped put our start so far this term into perspective.
Firstly, our home record: we currently have a better home record under Tilly than we did under Dave Webb in 91/92 and Barry Fry in 93/94- both of which, at the time, were remembered as good starts to the season. This feeling of a 'good start' may have helped by our away form, though in 93/94 our 9th and 10th league games were a 2-1 home defeat by Tranmere and a 4-0 loss away at Grimsby. Very similar to our 3-0 losses at home to Cardiff and away to Derby, in the sense that we conceeded 6 goals over the two games and we didn't score any (our goal against Tranmere was an own goal by Higgins).
On away form, if we had won 1 more game, then we would be matching pretty much our record, with only 91/92 and 93/94 being the exception.
There is also another positive to be drawn with the identical 96/97, 06/07 seasons: 1- IMO we have a better team this season with better consistency. 2- we have still had better results this season:
in 96/97 we lost away (amongst other games) 5-0 to Oxford, 6-1 to Palace and drew 0-0 Norwich.
So what does this add up to? IMO we have still had quite a good start for a young team stepping up to a new level. There is also something that statistics won't show- that the standard of football being played this season in the Championship is considered to be of a better quality than our previous 6 seasons in the second flight. If anything, I feel a bit better looking through these stats than I did travelling home from Derby on saturday. No one likes to lose- but I still think by the end of the season, we will be safe.
