Fenchurch Street Station

Having recently swapped over commuter lines to C2C – I have become aware that smoking is prevalent within Fenchurch Street station.
Surely, this isn’t allowed – I can not believe that in this day and age that there is no “No Smoking” policy in existence at the train station. I for one (a reformed smoker – yep we are the worst), could do without the pleasure of being smoked out whilst waiting for my train to arrive – and due to a shortfall of only 8 carriages on most commuter trains out of London in the evening you don’t have the choice to stand elsewhere as you wait as you run the risk of losing out on the scramble to locate a seat.

What amazes me more are the people who stand by the doors of the train as it pulls into a station with a cigarette in their mouth and a lighter in their hand.

When the train doors open they leap out and yet manage to light their cigarette before their leading foot has actually made contact with the platform.

Naturally, everyone else leaving the train has to walk through a huge plume of smoke.

Ban it.

Now!

And chances are that when you do get on a train, you end up having to stand or sit next to someone who has just put out a cancer stick, therefore smelling like a dirty old ash tray!

I think you find only Stations that have tube interconnections have banned smoking. Thus why Fenchurch St still allows smoking. Maybe you should get on at West Ham as that has a no smoking policy.

Fenchurch St and its commuters are all ashtrays !

Stop yer fookin' whingeing. I have to put up with fresh air all day, you only have to put up with stale air for a few minutes.

I'll stop smoking just before I get on a train when mobiles and ipods are banned on them. Noise pollutions is much more irksome. I look forward to the day in about 30 years time when everyone else around me is deaf.

You can't develop lung cancer from passively listening to ipods and mobiles though.

Neither is their conclusive proof that you can develop lung cancer from passive smoking.

I'm all for banning smoking in this country. Let's see how the non-smokers whinge about their taxes going up as a result.

The trouble with you non-smokers is that you all need a ciggie !

That's a tired old argument. Taxes may have to be raised in the short-term but the longer-term benefits will far outweigh this.

The reduced burden on the NHS by people who believe they should receive free treatment for choosing to slowly kill themselves is one example of where a government would (eventually) save money by banning smoking.

Certainly.

The NHS should only treat those which have an entirely natural explanation for those requiring treatment. If after treatment it is found that the problem had an element of contributory negligence then the patient should pay.

That should ease the burden on the NHS of all those smokers,

and Drinkers, Drivers, Sunday league footballers, Junk food eaters, etc etc

Not a bad idea. I'll happily pay increased taxes for a period to help towards the costs arising in investigating cases of potential contributory negligence.

Failing that the funds could go towards another new liver for George Best.

I've never been a smoker but do feel that we can go too far with the anti-smoking feeling in this country. Fair enough, in a restaurant or a pub where they have a kids license then ban it - I certainly don't want to have to smell smoke when I'm eating and I wouldn't want my daughter inhaling it either.

However if you are in a normal pub then if people are smoking deal with it, it's a pub for fecks sake not a health retreat.

And by the same token, so people stand on a train platform having a ciggie? Or they light up as soon as they get off the train? Big deal, they do it because they are addicted to them but pay enough in taxes for the right to have that addiction.
