Fashanu

Just got to the mid80s in my copy of A Century United and there's a picture of Peter Morris unveling his new signings for the 83/84 season (McDonut was amongst them) and John Fashanu is there, the caption says he failed to agree a contract prior to the start of the season and went elsewhere.

Can any of the older posters on here shed more light on this story? It seemed slightly relevant (albeit under different circumstances) with the events of the past few days!

I think that you will find that the Manager involved was Peter Morris, rather than Colin, who was a nippy winger for us in the mid 70's. I remember the deal to bring the guy to us but I believe that the player involved was Steve Anthrobus. He appeared in the team sheet and everything but he never actually signed. I was very close to the inner sanctum in those days and cannot recall ever seeing John Fashanu being there.

Edited, ta!
I know, when I saw the pic I thought can this be true? But it's there in black & white.

THe Anthrobus thing was later as I remember it, about 87, when he was signed on loan by us then his club (millwall) sold him to Wimbledon so he never turned out for us. Never knew of any connection with John FAshanu...cant stand the guy.

The Steve Anthrobus "signing" was late 80s, early 90s rather than early 80s IIRC.

Great minds, great minds....

Interested to hear the John Fashanu story....was he named in the article / caption, or are you just going by the photo, in which case could he just be a look a likey?

Fashani signed for Lincoln during the 83/94 season after leaving Norwich.
He scored 11 goals in 36 appearances for the imps before moving to Millwall then onto Wimbledon.

Maybe we lost out to Lincoln?

Fashanu played at least one reserve game for us. I was at the game & he took exception to a defender's close attention & laid him out with one of the sweetest punches you'll ever see. It was missed by most, including the officials, as we were defending a corner at the time. I don't think it was missed by Morris, as I don't he played him afterwards!

Also in that infamous 1983/4 we signed Tony Currie(former Sheffield United legend). He was named in the team for a home game against Wimbledon, got injured in the warm up and never did play a 1st team for us.

was working on the bull pub hockley, sufc players tur ned up to train on the lower field next to the pub. fashanu got injured that day and was discarded the rest is history.

Peter Morris bought three forwards in on trial they were McDonough, Fashanu and Ronnie Moore. Typically Morris decided on the weakest link and we ended up with Donut.
