Far right attacks increase after BNP election defeat

Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland? Just a guess.

Good shout Paul, but I'm not sure, the likes of the charmless Adams & McGuinness were often interviewed with an actor voicing their words. And I'm pretty sure that SF and other Republican parties stood for Parliament in the 70's.

I laughed, I honestly laughed out loud after reading that complete tripe. Concrete pillars thrown, reinforced glass headbutted and chucked through holes in the glass like frisbees, spare us from this rubbish. Couldn't poor old Beverly have her hand photographed so the world could see the horrendous injury that required surgery and a drip while she spent 3 days in hospital. Whats next, Nick Griffin turned her into a newt but she got better. Slow news day or perhaps The Guardian is making up its own version of events.

Try Oswald Molesley's British Union of Fascists proscribed in 1940.

Fair enough, as I said I didn't know, and I'd suggest given the circumstances the government of the time would have had no option. I believe although not banned leading members of the Communist Party were detained.

Ok, I'll rephrase the question, in peace time and since 1800 have a political party been banned in the UK.

Incidentally Phil, you're a fan of Keynes I believe, if so it appears that you and Oswald Moseley may have something in common.

I would have thought that Molesley and his British Union of Fascists, have far more in common with their modern contemporaries, such as the NF,BNP and the EDL, than they might do with an unaligned left winger, such as myself.
As you suggest, Molesley was an early convert to Keynsian economics(in the 20's) but then so was his good personal friend Hitler(in the 30's).They, of course, were both fascists.Whereas Keynes was a lifelong radical but political (and economic)Liberal. So,no real comparison there, then.:nope:

(In answer to your coment about the CPGB:In September 1939, despite the Hitler-Stalin pact, Harry Pollitt(General Secretary of the CPGB) welcomed the British declaration of war on Nazi Germany. When this turned out to be contrary to the Soviet line (as Rajani Palme Dutt, who succeeded him as General Secretary, had warned him it would be), he was forced to resign.
He was reinstated in 1941 when the Soviet Union entered the war)
